Alumna Wendy Farmerie ’91 will return to campus Homecoming Weekend to offer Purchase with a Purpose: A Fair Trade Market from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, in McKelvey Campus Center.

Linda Claybourn Jenkins ’80 will collaborate with a second fair trade market, Trades of Hope. Farmerie and Jenkins will offer alumni the opportunity to think globally by purchasing international handmade crafts.

Farmerie spoke on campus in September to Inquiry students about the journey that led to owning her business, Silk Road Fair Trade Market, located in New Wilmington. Her business allows consumers to purchase international, handmade gifts to support women from Africa, Asia and the Middle East who are seeking to emerge out of the poverty cycle.

She shared stories with students about the workers’ struggles she witnessed while employed in the international business world.  She explained her hopes of finding a different way to support international women in need of operating small sustainable businesses to provide food, shelter and education for their families.

Purchase with a Purpose is co-sponsored by Westminster’s School of Education, Inquiry and the Office of Faith and Spirituality.
