Music Professor Guest Conducts PMEA District 1 Junior District Orchestra

Dr. Melinda Crawford Perttu, assistant professor of music at Westminster College, guest conducted the PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators Association) District 1 Junior District Orchestra on March 31 and April 1, 2017. The event was hosted by Norwin High School in Irwin, PA

Nearly 140 participants, in grades 7-9, came from 59 different school districts in PMEA District 1 (the greater Pittsburgh area) attended and rehearsed music for full orchestra and string orchestra over the period of two days and performed on Saturday.

At Westminster, Dr. Crawford Perttu directs the symphony orchestra, teaches the string pedagogy sequence as well as private violin and viola lessons, and supervises the weekly string master class and string lab. She also performs as part of the Westminster Faculty Piano Trio and with the Greenville Symphony

Before receiving her Ph.D. in music education with an emphasis in string pedagogy from The Ohio State University, Dr. Crawford Perttu earned an M.A. in music education from The Ohio State University and a B.S. in music education from Duquesne University. She taught in the public schools of Calvert County, Maryland, and Fairfax County, Virginia before coming to Westminster.
