The mission of the Department of Psychology is to provide a curriculum reflective of contemporary psychology, to work cooperatively with the college in providing students with the skills intrinsic to a liberal arts education, and to provide interdisciplinary experiences. Contemporary psychology is composed of information collected through scientific inquiry. Our curriculum will train you to understand this information and to contribute actively to the quest.
Scientific inquiry is the core that links all efforts in the discipline of psychology and, consequently, it is the core of our curriculum. As a major, you will receive a general introductory overview of psychology, take a basic course in research methodology, and complete a thesis project.
As a student in the Department of Psychology, you'll be trained intensively in critical thinking and oral and written communication skills in all courses, and very explicitly so in our introductory, research methods, and capstone courses. Additionally, our internship program affords opportunities for you to learn from and serve in a wide variety of social contexts.
At Westminster, learning isn’t limited to the classroom. In each of our 50+ majors and pre-professional programs, your education will be enhanced by the purposeful combination of expert classroom instruction and hands-on learning opportunities. Internships, undergraduate research and studying abroad are just a few of the real experiences our students get that lead to real success after graduation.
Teachers, researchers, experts, mentors...our faculty members are all these things and more to their students. They trained in universities around the globe, but they chose to teach and conduct research at Westminster because of the focus on student development and success. Their dedication to mentoring and teaching is evident in our students’ success when it comes to graduation rates, post-graduation employment and graduate and professional school acceptance.
