New Wilmington History Book Available at Pre-Publication Price

"The History of New Wilmington" book will arrive soon, but there is still time to take advantage of the pre-publication sale price of $24.95.

"When the book becomes available for sale, the price is $29.95," said Al Sternbergh, a member of the book committee.  "People may want to take advantage of the $24.95 pre-publication price.  There is an additional $8 charge for those who want books shipped to them."

This 12-chapter book, explores the life and times of a town since 1797.  The history includes: Native Americans, town government and services, civic and community organizations, churches, the Amish, The Tavern, leisure time and sports activities, and Westminster College.  It also includes a family section with over 100 photographs of historic homes, people and more.

 Order forms are available at the following New Wilmington locations: Borough Building, Miller's Variety Store, and the Westminster College Book Store.  Orders can also be placed through United States mail by sending your name, address, and check to: New Wilmington History Book, P.O. Faculty Forum Will Present Effects of Text on Music

Dr. Robin Lind, assistant professor of music and director of choral activities at Westminster College, will present "The Effect of Text on Music with a Demonstration and Performance by the Chamber Singers" at Faculty Forum Wednesday, April 6, at 11:45 a.m. in Orr Auditorium.

"I will discuss the relationship between text and music as it relates to choral singing," Lind said.  "The Chamber Singers will demonstrate the concepts presented and will perform works by Brahms and Gershwin."

Faculty forum, established in 1990, serves as a venue for the exchange of ideas and information among Westminster College faculty.  Speakers present their research, teaching ideas, lectures, performances, special programs, and uses of technology to keep faculty informed about the work of colleagues from many disciplines.

Lind, who has been with Westminster College since 2000, earned her undergraduate degree from Albertsons College of Idaho, master's from the University of Oregon, and Ph.D. from the University of Utah.

Westminster Professor to Read from His New Book

Dr. David Swerdlow, professor of English at Westminster College, will present "The Nests and Other Poems, A Reading" at Faculty Forum Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 11:45 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater located in the McKelvey Campus Center.

 "I will be reading poems from my new book manuscript, The Nests," Swerdlow said.  "This manuscript, which I completed during my fall sabbatical, is a contemporary sonnet sequence inspired by love and grief."

 Swerdlow, who has been with Westminster College since 1990, earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and his master's and Ph.D. from Ohio University.

Westminster College Offers New Form of Musical Theater

Curtain Up, a new form for musical theater which features the classic music of George and Ira Gershwin, premieres Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.

George Kaufman's script for Curtain Up is a satire about a war waged by the U.S. against Switzerland over cheese tariffs at the prodding of a dairy tycoon who agrees to finance the war if they name it after him.  The music features Gershwin's "Strike Up the Band," "I've Got a Crush on You," and "The Man I Love."
