Over 900 area junior and senior high school students competed in the Northeast Regional Science Olympiad competition at Westminster College March 30.

Eleven schools advanced to the state competition to be held at Juniata College April 27.

The top six teams in the high school category were: (1) DuBois Area High School, (2) Montour High School, (3) Taylor Allderdice High School, (4) Clarion Area High School, (5) Kane Area High School, and (6) Indiana Area High School.

The top five teams in the junior high school category were: (1) Kane Area Middle School, (2) Clarion Area Junior High School, (3) Indiana Junior High School, (4) North East Middle School, and (5) DuBois Middle School.

"It was a pleasure to have so many talented young students visit out campus," said Linda Volpe, co-coordinator of the event and assistant to the dean of Westminster College. "With more and more students interested in science and technology, the level of this competition continues to grow each year."

"Last year, Kane, a winner in our regional competition, went on to compete on the national level," said Dr. Martha R. Joseph, co-coordinator of the event and assistant professor of chemistry at Westminster College. "Last year I also helped at the state level, and this year I have the privilege to work at both the state and national level, which will be held May 19 at Colorado Springs."
