New Wilmington Community Arts & Heritage Festival Announces Schedule of Events

Posted on Friday, July 30, 2004

The second annual New Wilmington Community Arts & Heritage Festival is scheduled Friday-Sunday, Aug. 6-8, and the schedule offers something for everyone.

"If you and your family can't find something fun to do at the New Wilmington Community Arts & Heritage Festival, you're not trying hard enough," said New Wilmington Area Chamber of Commerce President Tim Kelly.

The event extends from downtown Market Street to the 300-acre Westminster College campus with events running from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

"There really is something for everyone at the New Wilmington Community Arts & Heritage Festival," Kelly said.  "The cooperation from the Chamber, area businesses, The Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, and Westminster College has been phenomenal.  We are excited to share some of our area's treasures."

Many of the events such as the opening ceremony, bands, voice performances, juggling and unicycle performances, as well as several types of dance performances will be held on the community stage located in the parking lot of Jameson Health Place. Shenango on the Green is host to various authors and more musical presentations, while still more musical productions can be heard in the artist's area located near Westminster's Old Main building.

The children's tent on the corner of Market Street and Waugh Avenue is sure to be a family favorite.  Face painting, printmaking, friendship bracelets and festival hats are just a few of the events happening there.  Another family favorite is Saturday evening's fireworks display over Brittain Lake.

The festival also features a tour of the Westminster College Field Station and Nature Trail, and a chance to get up close and personal with human and animal mummies at the Hoyt Science Resources Center. While traveling down Market Street, visitors may catch a glimpse of the 25-mile bike race, hear bagpipers, see a clown do balloon sculpting, and have the opportunity catch a trolley to view the country side.

The event is made possible by the cooperation of the New Wilmington Area Chamber of Commerce, The Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, and Westminster College.

"Westminster College is pleased to work with the Chamber and The Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts on this exciting project," said Westminster College President R. Thomas Williamson.  "Many of our faculty and staff are involved in the festival, and we look forward to sharing our facilities with the community and many festival visitors."
