Carlo Hawkwalker, an elder for the Western Cherokee Nation, will speak at Westminster College Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m. in the McKelvey Campus Center Student Lounge.

Hawkwalker's public presentation, "Medicines of the Heart," and his presentation to two religion classes of "Understanding Religious Experience and Expression," will review Native American traditions.

Hawkwalker, as a pipe carrier and sundancer, is heavily involved in Native American ceremony.  He has served on the Native American Steering Committee for the Prevention of Substance Abuse, was the co-facilitator of the Indigenous Round Table of Russia in St. Petersburg, and is involved in international issues such as the world peace treaty campaign.  He is also a storyteller.

This event, which is part of the Heinz Lecture Series: Religion and the Religions, is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact Dr. Bryan Rennie, associate professor of religion at Westminster College and coordinator of this event, at (724) 946-7151 or e-mail brennie@westminster.edu.
