Students Attend Philosophy Conference

Posted on Thursday, March 8, 2007

Twelve Westminster College students recently attended the 31st annual Midsouth Philosophy Conference at the University of Memphis.

"This has become an annual event, and the fifth time I have taken Westminster College students to this conference," said Dr. David Goldberg, Westminster College assistant professor of philosophy. "This year I commented on a paper by Lawrence Schmidt from Hendrix College, Revisiting Gadamer's Schleiermacher Interpretation."

"The Midsouth conference is one of the largest regional meetings and attracts scholars from around the nation and world. Most participants are either employed faculty or graduate students making Westminster College's contingent of undergraduate students one of the largest at the conference," Goldberg continued. "One of the memorable moments for some of the students was the keynote speaker, Dermot Moran from University College Dublin, who is the editor of the text I am using for my 19th and 20th Century Philosophy course. It was fun to see the look of accomplishment on the students who are in this class when they recognized much of what Professor Moran was discussing."

Goldberg, who has been with Westminster College since 2002, earned his undergraduate and master's degrees from Pennsylvania State University and his Ph.D. from Duquesne University.
