Westminster College will host the 2007 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 5 High School Honors Chorus concert Saturday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.
Eighty high school students were chosen from over 400 who auditioned to be part of the chorus.
The program includes works by Haydn, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Dello Joio. A women's chorus will present "O Pastorelle Addio" by Umberto Giordano, and a men's chorus will perform "Down in the Valley" arranged by George Mead.
Guest conductor Dr. Jong Hyun Kim is professor of music and director of choral activities and vocal studies at Lynchburg College in Virginia. A native of Seoul, he holds degrees in choral conducting from Chung-Ang University, a master's from Eastman School of Music, and a doctorate from Michigan State University. He has taught at Dixie State College (Utah), Oakland University (Michigan), and Chung-Ang University, and has been a guest conductor of many professional, community, and high school honor choirs and orchestras in the United State and Korea.
Accompanist for the chorus is Bryan Helsel, a 1997 Westminster graduate, who earned a master's in piano performance from Duquesne University. He is the director of choirs and music technology at Butler Area Senior High School. He plays trumpet in the Butler Brass Quintet, piano in the Butler Symphony, and organ and keyboards at North Main Street Church of God. In addition to performing and conducting, he is the owner of Helsel Music, a full-production recording studio.
The concert is open to the public and tickets are available at the door ($4 for adults and $2 for students).
Contact Dr. Robin Lind, Westminster director of choral activities and host of the event, at (724) 946-7278 or e-mail lindra@westminster.edu for additional information.
