"Get Real!" Series Presents Investment Session

Posted on Tuesday, February 12, 2008

Westminster College's "Get Real!" life preparation series continues Thursday, Feb. 21, with "Smart Investing for Beginners" presented by David Smith, Westminster College assistant professor of accounting.

"The presentation is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the more common types of investments available; where to go to invest; what type of risk is involved with different kinds of investments; and what expectations come with different types of investments," Smith said.

Smith has been with Westminster College since 2004. He earned an undergraduate degree from Bucknell University, a master's in taxation from Robert Morris University, and an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a certified public accountant in Pennsylvania.

Sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs, the "Get Real!" series acquaints students with life after college. It provides helpful advice on financial planning; banking; medical care; consumer and personal legal matters; apartment, auto, and house hunting; getting the most out of leisure activities; and preparing for lifelong relationships.

Each session covers a different topic and runs from 12:40-1:50 p.m. in the Witherspoon Lakeview Room. Attendance is limited to 25 students, with preference given to juniors and seniors. Two additional sessions are scheduled for the spring semester: "Navigating the Insurance Policy Rapids" on March 6, and a second session of "Investing for the Good Life" on April 10.
