Westminster College Offers Continuing Education Classes for Fall

Westminster College announces several personal enrichment and leisure courses for community residents. Continuing Education classes and seminars are non-credit and are open to all interested individuals. Formal admission to Westminster College is not required.

Personal fitness classes are scheduled in three sessions: Session A runs from Sept. 17 through Oct. 15; session B runs from Oct. 22 through Nov. 12; and session C runs from Nov. 19 through Dec. 17. Classes are held in the dance studio in Old 77.

Yoga classes run all three sessions on Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m. Participants learn how to improve their physical and mental well-being through a series of exercises.

Computer classes are designed to meet the needs of the beginner to the accomplished user. All computer classes are hands-on workshops and are held in room 214 of Patterson Hall.

Introduction to Computers for Those Afraid to Touch One, new this year, runs Tuesday-Thursday, Sept. 23-25, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. This workshop will promote comfort and confidence with the computer in a relaxed atmosphere.

Microsoft Word 2003 runs Tuesday-Thursday, Sept. 30-Oct. 2, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Learn how to create, modify, edit, save, print, open and close documents, and more in Microsoft Word XP.

Getting Started with Word 2007, another new offering, is scheduled Tuesday-Thursday, Oct. 7-9, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. This course is designed for experienced Word users who have worked with earlier versions of Microsoft Office Word, ideally Microsoft Office Word 2003.

Microsoft Excel 2003 is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 14 and 16, from 5-7 p.m. Learn to use spreadsheets to set up budgets, track expenses, organize information, and eliminate paper clutter.

Intermediate Excel is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 21 and 23, from 5-7 p.m. Learn to make the most of Excel's useful, efficiency-boosting, time-saving features and functions.

Introduction to Access 2003 is scheduled for Tuesday-Thursday, Oct. 28-30, from 5-7 p.m. This course teaches creation of databases and tables for storing and manipulating data.

Intermediate Access 2003 is scheduled for Tuesday-Thursday, Nov. 4-6, from 5-7 p.m., and teaches advanced query techniques, along with the creation and use of customized forms and reports.

Microsoft Publisher 2003 is scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday, Nov. 11 and 13, from 5-7 p.m. Learn to create newsletters, business cards, brochures, calendars, birthday cards, and invitations.

PowerPoint 2003 is scheduled for Monday and Wednesday, Nov. 17 and 19, from 5-7 p.m. Learn to include clip art, graphs, tables, and charts using this versatile presentation program.

Personal enrichment classes include five new offerings this year:

Calligraphy will be held Mondays, Sept. 15, 22, 29, and Oct. 6, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Drinko Conference Room of the McKelvey Campus Center. Basic lettering and techniques will be taught for those wishing to learn to write in a calligraphic style.

Works of Scherenschnitte will be held Mondays, Oct. 20, 27, and Nov. 3 and 10, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Drinko Conference Room. Learn to use a blade for this style of paper cutting based on the German art form "scherenschnitte."

Better Eats: The Science of Cooking is scheduled for Tuesdays, Oct. 14, 21, and 28, from 7-9 p.m. in room 206 of the Hoyt Science Resources Center. Learn about the chemical and physical properties underlying basic cooking techniques and enjoy tasty samples.

And Leadership for All will be held Thursdays, Oct. 9 and 16, from 7-9 p.m. in room 213 in Old Main Memorial. This course provides an overview of the vast body of leadership principals and applications in today's organizational environment.

Leadership for Lasting Change is scheduled for Thursdays, Oct. 23 and 30, from 7-9 p.m. in room 213 of Old Main. This courses explores the impact leadership has on others and leadership creates lasting change.

Create Your Own Class is an opportunity for groups of six to eight participants to request instruction in a specific area. The group can contact the Continuing Education office, who will attempt to locate an appropriate skilled instructor to meet their interests and schedule a class.
