Westminster College's Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning awarded travel/presentation grants to the six students in Westminster's Horn Ensemble to attend the Mid-South Horn Workshop March 20-22 in Memphis, Tenn.

Katie DiCola, a sophomore biology and music major, is a daughter of Linda Beraduce and Thomas DiCola, both of Boardman, Ohio. She is a graduate of Boardman High School.

Sarah Ortz, a sophomore music education major, is a daughter of William and Connie Ortz of Petersburg, Ohio, and a graduate of Springfield Local High School.

Jillian Rhen, a freshman music education major, is a daughter of J. Steven and Jacqueline Rhen of Edinboro and a graduate of General McLane High School.

Monica Ruhlman, a sophomore English major, is a daughter of David and Laurie Ruhlman of Mercer and a graduate of Mercer Area High School.

Victoria Walker, a sophomore music education major, is a daughter of James and Linda Walker of Worthington and a graduate of Kittanning High School.

Christin Zolkiewicz, a junior music performance major, is a daughter of Samuel and Leslieann Harris of Monaca and a graduate of Center High School.

The Horn Ensemble is under the direction of Robert Cole, Westminster adjunct music faculty. He will attend the workshop as an exhibitor.

"Since these students regularly play together as an ensemble, I asked them to perform in a college Horn Ensemble concert at the workshop," Cole said. "Fortunately, they agreed."

The Mid-South Horn Workshop draws about 150 attendees, a mix of students and amateur and professional hornists.

The Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was created to enrich undergraduate education at Westminster through advancing world-class teaching as well as by participating in collaborations that address community and regional needs including strengthening K-12 education. The Undergraduate Research Initiative provides funding for students to conduct research and to present their research at regional and national conferences.
