Posted on Thursday, August 26, 2010

Westminster College junior mathematics major Richard Ligo earned an Outstanding Presentation Award at the Mathematical Association of America's MathFest Aug. 5-7 in Pittsburgh.

Ligo presented "The Search for Extremal Graphs," the results of research conducted with seniors Stephen Donnel and Aaron Zavora under the supervision of Dr. David Offner, Westminster assistant professor of mathematics.

Over 150 student presentations were given by nearly 185 student speakers to set a record for the undergraduate portion of MathFest.

"If you were fortunate enough to attend MathFest, you saw the high mathematical caliber and enthusiasm of the student presenters," said Dr. J. Lyn Miller, co-organizer of the undergraduate student talk sessions. "People who shared their impressions of these talks were impressed by the level of professionalism and poise of the students and, of course, by the quality of their work."

Ligo is a son of Jesse and Amy Ligo of Mercer and a graduate of Mercer Area High School.

Donnel, a mathematics major, is a son of Paula Donnel of Evans City and Douglas Donnel of Warner Robins, Ga. He is a graduate of Seneca Valley High School.

Zavora, a mathematics and computer science major, is a son of David and Suzanne Zavora of Westmoreland City and a graduate of Norwin High School.
