College to Host International Peacemakers

Posted on Friday, September 17, 2010

Westminster College's Office of the Chaplain and Church Relations will host two international peacemakers Sept. 30-Oct. 11.

The Rev. Orozu Lokine Daky from the Presbyterian Church in Sudan and the Rev. Joel Tendero from the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) will speak about peace and justice issues from the perspective of their ministries in their respective countries.

Daky is the regional coordinator of the Serving and Learning Together (SALT) Development Agency, which equips churches and other organizations for the development of Sudan. An ordained pastor, he provides leadership in building peace between the Dinka and Murle peoples and coordinates peacemaking, mission, and external relations for Eastern Jonglei Presbytery.

Daky will speak on "Born into Violence" at a Peace Studies Coffeehouse Thursday, Sept. 30, at 4:15 p.m. in room 314 Thompson Clark Hall. He will be the guest speaker during Chapel worship Friday, Oct. 1, at 11:40 a.m. and at Vespers worship Sunday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. Worship services will be in Wallace Memorial Chapel and are open to the public.

Tendero is an ordained minister serving his third term as conference minister of the Northeast Southern Tagalog Conference of the UCCP, which is in partnership with the Sacramento Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He has been involved in peacemaking ministry of the UCCP for more than 20 years.

Tendero, hosted by the Butler Presbytery, will speak at Chapel worship Monday, Oct. 11, at 11:40 a.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel. He is scheduled to spend the afternoon visiting a variety of classes.

Arranged through the denominational offices of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in Louisville, Ky., the International Peacemakers Program has been in existence more than 20 years. International Peacemakers are leaders engaged in peacemaking in their own areas of the world and are invited by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to visit in the United States to help understand the peace and justice concerns of others around the world.
