Biology Professor to Share Research Study at Faculty Forum

Posted on Thursday, April 7, 2011

Dr. Karen Resendes, Westminster College assistant professor of biology, will present the results of a research study at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, April 13, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.

"Clash of the Titans! Analysis of Biological Concept Retention in Blended Web vs. Traditional Instruction" compares students' retention of specific biological concepts in introductory biology courses for non-majors at Westminster with those of collaborators at San Diego State University.  The joint inquiry seeks to determine if a blended web/large lecture course (San Diego) would result in the same educational outcomes as a lecture/laboratory course with a small number of students (Westminster).

Resendes, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2009, earned an undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary and Ph.D. from Brown University.

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics emerita, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning.  Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.
