Westminster College's Language in Motion program will host 90 high school students from Wilmington Area School District for the fifth annual Foreign Language Intercultural Day Monday, April 18.

This year's theme, "The Road to Utopia," will involve Latin, Spanish, French, and gifted students in a full day of activities led by Westminster students.  The workshop will give students the opportunity to focus on the world's political systems through interviews of representatives of the various systems, assuming roles in a society, and deciding the government that is the best fit for them.  They will read and analyze significant political writings in the foreign language they have been studying and will end the day by participating in a staged political rally.

Milagros Swerdlow, Westminster lecturer in Spanish and Language in Motion coordinator, has selected five Westminster students to make presentations and guide activities throughout the day:
Luke Franchuk, a senior history major, is a son of Gary and Patrice Franchuk of Butler and a graduate of Shady Side Academy.
Adam Griffith, a senior history and Latin major, is a son of Linda Miller of Warren, Ohio, and Griffith Griffith of Cortland, Ohio.  He is a graduate of Howland High School.
Peter Lund of Erie is a student in Westminster's Lifelong Learning Program.
Brooke Lyon, a senior Spanish major, is a daughter of James and Barbara Lyon of Butler and a graduate of Butler Area High School.
Noelle Nuckels, a senior French major, is a daughter of Lawrence and Marilyn Nuckels of Adamsburg and a graduate of Norwin High School.

The school district's language teachers will provide assistance and expertise, along with Dr. Dwight Castro, Westminster professor of classics.

Language in Motion is an innovative outreach program that gives study-abroad returnees, international students, and upper-level language students the opportunity to create language and cultural activities for presentation in K-12 language, social studies, and other classes where culture can be studied.

Westminster's Language in Motion program is sponsored by Westminster's Department of Modern Languages and the Heritage Chair of Humanities.
