Dr. Hans Thewissen, from the Department of Anatomy of the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, will speak at a biology seminar Thursday, Nov. 20, at 5:15 p.m. in Phillips Lecture Hall of the Hoyt Sciences Resources Center of Westminster College.

"Dr. Thewissen has a background in biology and geology, and his research focuses on morphological changes in the evolution of mammals," said Dr. John Robertson, assistant professor of biology at Westminster College. "In recent years, he has made major contributions in the area of whales, dolphins, and porpoises, a group of particular interest because their evolution from ancestral land mammals obviously included a dramatic transition to life in the ocean. Dr. Thewissen does field work looking for fossils, primarily in India and Pakistan, and he has done significant work extending fossil evidence to provide a better understanding of locomotion, osmoregulation, and hearing in early cetaceans."

The talk is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Robertson at (724) 946-7044 or e-mail robertjc@westminster.edu.
