Children's Opera "Hansel & Gretel" Coming to Westminster

Posted on Tuesday, October 28, 2003

The children's opera, "Hansel & Gretel" is coming to Westminster College Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 18 and 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.

The opera, directed by Dr. Anne Hagan Bentz, assistant professor of music, features a cast of 10 Westminster College students and eight local junior high and high school students. Marie Libal-Smith, a member of the Westminster music faculty, and students of the Westminster College orchestra will accompany the students.

The traditional story is about two poor children who become lost in the woods, while picking strawberries for their mother. When they awake the next day, they find a magical gingerbread house, which belongs to the evil witch who captures them and makes plans to turn them into gingerbread children. The clever children outwit the witch, and foil her plan by tricking her to "look into the oven" and close the door behind her. After freeing the gingerbread children, they are reunited with their parents.

The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are necessary. For more information, contact Bentz at (724) 946-6045 or e-mail bentzah@westminster.edu.
