Westminster College Endowed Scholarships


 

The following endowed funds have been established through contributions from alumni and friends of the College for the purpose of providing supplemental sources of financial assistance to students who meet the criteria set by the donors.

Harriet Boozell Abbott Scholarship

This fund was established in 1987 in memory of Mrs. Abbott ’45 by her daughter, Judy Wasko. Income from the fund is used to aid a music student with financial need.

John S. Adams Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2012 through a bequest from the estate of John Sidney Adams. Mr. Adams was a lifelong resident of Trumbull County, Ohio. He graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in Warren and served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Mr. Adams believed strongly in the importance of higher education and considered Westminster College to be “an excellent educational institution.” Income from the fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to students from middle-income families in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania who represent a “good fit” for Westminster College but whose family circumstances do not qualify for federal need-based grant assistance. This merit-based scholarship is intended to encourage good students to attend Westminster, students who may not otherwise be in a financial position to do so. Awards are renewable provided student recipients remain in good academic standing. No student shall receive the award for more than four years of undergraduate study. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Dr. & Mrs. John Albright Memorial Scholarship

The income from a bequest in 1975 from the estate of Dr. and Mrs. John G. Albright is used for scholarships for students majoring in physics, chemistry or mathematics. Dr. Albright was visiting professor of physics at Westminster from 1955-65.

Mary Margaret Allen Scholarship

The income from this fund is used to aid students with financial need. It was established in 1979 by Miss Allen of Santa Fe, N.M., as part of the Golden Anniversary gift of her 1929 class.

John Alldred Scholarship

The income from a bequest in 1963 from the estate of John Alldred of Pittsburgh, Pa., is used to assist students “with ability and character who have financial need.”

Dr. Joseph Galbraith Alter Scholarship

This fund was established in 1991 in memory of Dr. Alter ’48 by bequest of Verna Frances Alter, his wife. The income provides support to the College’s student financial aid program for otherwise unfunded costs of college-named scholarship awards as designated by the Board of Trustees.

Alumni Scholarship

This fund, created in 1981 by gifts from alumni, provides income for scholarships.

Bayard Amelia Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established in 1999 by a planned gift from Mr. Bayard Amelia, a friend of Westminster College. The income from this fund will be used on an annual basis for a student based on financial need. The student is to be determined by the director of financial aid.

Doris and Jack Andrews Academic Scholarship Award

The fund was established in 2007 by the trustees of The Doris and Jack Andrews Trust: Dr. William H. Bunn Jr., Gregory L. Ridler, and Paul J. Williams, a Westminster alumnus from the Class of 1965. The award is intended as a memorial tribute to the lives of Mahoning County philanthropists, Doris and Jack Andrews. Income from the fund will support one award every four years. Preference will be given to a first-year student from Mahoning County who graduated from a Mahoning County high school; second preference will be given to a student from either Trumbull or Columbiana counties. The recipient will be assured of assistance for four (4) consecutive years provided he/she maintains an overall GPA of 3.00 or better and remains a good citizen of the campus and the larger community. Westminster College admissions staff will work with guidance counselors in Mahoning, Trumbull, and Columbiana County high schools to promote the award. Primary criteria for this merit-based award are outstanding academic achievement and leadership potential. Financial need is not a consideration. The recipient must have earned a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.50 in college preparatory subjects and participated in academically-oriented extracurricular, service, and civic activities. The Andrews Scholar will be selected by the vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, the dean of admissions and enrollment management, and the director of financial aid.

Michael F. Anthony '77 Scholarship Fund

Michael was a business administration major and member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity while attending Westminster College. Upon graduation, he began a 40-year career in the retail industry to include chairman, president and CEO of Brookstone Inc. and most recently, chairman, president and CEO of Things Remembered Inc. This renewable, merit-based scholarship was established in 2016 and is awarded to an incoming freshman student who graduated from Corry Area High School in Corry, Pa., or second preference, a school district in Erie County, Pa., who is in good academic standing with high academic achievement and demonstrated leadership qualities.

Carolyn Dines Arfken Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 1998 by George B. Arfken in memory of his wife, Carolyn Dines Arfken, a 1945 graduate of the College. The income from the fund is awarded annually to a student or students on the basis of academic achievement. The recipient will be chosen by the director of financial aid.

Clyde A. Armstrong Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1976 by gifts from Mr. Armstrong's family and friends. A member of the Class of 1919, he served Westminster with distinction as a member of the College's Board of Trustees for 32 years, including seven as president of the Board. He also originated the Annual Giving Fund of the Alumni Association. The memorial fund will support scholarships for students demonstrating academic promise and leadership through involvement in extracurricular activities.

Jon J. Art Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1978 by Mr. and Mrs. Donald M. Art, parents of Jon J. Art ’75. The fund supports scholarships for students with financial need from Allegheny County who demonstrate academic promise and leadership through involvement with extracurricular and service activities. Students from Gateway High School in Monroeville will receive first preference.

Atlantic Avenue United Presbyterian Church Scholarship

This fund was established in 1986 to aid academically deserving or financially needy students, with preference given to students from the McKeesport area.

Alice Sluiter Auld Memorial Scholarship

John P. Auld established this scholarship in 1957 as a memorial to his wife. Preference is given to freshmen from Hampton, Shaler, Richland, or North Allegheny high schools. The recipient must demonstrate need and academic ability.

Susan Anna Dickson Barcus Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1989 through a bequest from the estate of Miriam Barcus Brooks in memory of her mother, Susan Anna Dickson Barcus, Westminster Class of 1887.

William Carl Barnard Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established in 2000 in memory of William C. Barnard, Class of 1972, with gifts from his mother, Nell Glaser Whipkey ’59 and her husband, Dr. Kenneth Whipkey, and family and friends. This scholarship has no restrictions and is awarded at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Carrie Graham Bauer Scholarship

The income from a trust created in 1975 by Mrs. Bauer is to be used to provide scholarships for students from Allegheny County.

Elizabeth Bayer Memorial Fund

To aid sincere and dedicated persons in pursuing or furthering their training in the teaching profession by scholarships and/or loans, this fund was created in 1966 by bequest from the estate of Mrs. Elizabeth Bayer of Butler, Pa.

Becker/Adams Family Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this Scholarship was established in 2023, by Edmund Rose Becker and Kathleen Adams Becker in memory of Edmund's parents, Randy and Marjorie Becker. Description confirmed on May 8, 2023.

Anna Bell Memorial Scholarship

A. Edward Bell, Franklin, Pa., established this scholarship in 1946 in memory of his sister, Anna Bell.

John A. Bell Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in the 1920s by Mr. Bell, banker and businessman from Carnegie, Pa. It provides scholarships for students, preferably from the Carnegie area, recommended by the Christ United Presbyterian Church of Carnegie.

Elizabeth J. Benson Scholarship

This fund was established in 1997 by Elizabeth J. Benson '29. Income from this fund is awarded annually to deserving students demonstrating financial need. The recipient will be determined by the director of financial aid.

Ron Bergey Accounting Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 to honor Professor Emeritus Ron Bergey for his 42 years of dedicated service to Westminster College from 1962-2004. The scholarship was made possible through contributions received from alumni and friends to the Ron Bergey Project in Old Main Memorial. Income from the fund will be awarded each academic year to one outstanding Westminster accounting major who has completed as least 16 semester hours in accounting, who has written a letter of application for the scholarship to the Department of Economics and Business, and who intends to enter the accounting profession. The Ron Bergey Accounting Scholarship shall be awarded at the discretion of the Department of Economics and Business and the director of financial aid based on achievement and not necessarily on financial need.

George R. and Sharon Berlin Endowed Honors Scholarship Program

This fund was established in 2012 by George R. and Sharon Berlin to support Westminster's Honors Program and its most academically promising students. Income from the fund shall be used to initially provide scholarship support for a minimum of up to two (2) students admitted into the Honors Program and may be supplemental to other forms of merit or need-based aid awarded by the College. Eligible recipients will have a minimum 1300 SAT or 29 ACT scores and a recalculated high school GPA of 3.75 or higher. Awards will be renewable to a maximum of four years provided the recipient(s) maintains a 3.50 GPA.

William Berlin Scholarship

This fund was established in 1996 by Mr. George Berlin in memory of his father, Mr. William Berlin, who served as a trustee of Westminster College from 1961-1969. The scholarship(s) will be awarded annually to students who plan to enter the Christian ministry or pursue a religious vocation. These students must also have maintained high standards of scholarship, been actively involved in community service, and demonstrate some form of special need. The determination of special need will be made by the director of financial aid, and may include such factors as unusual circumstances, which contribute to the hardship and family income. If there are no candidates in a given year who meet all of these criteria, the president of the College and the dean of admissions will award the scholarship to a student who best exemplifies its general ideas of academic achievement, a commitment to service, and some form of special need.

John H. Binder and Shirley L. Binder Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established in 2007 by John H. Binder in memory of his wife, Shirley. The scholarship will benefit a male student from a high school in Lawrence or Mercer County with financial need who has a minimum high school GPA of 2.75 in academic subjects and demonstrates leadership qualities through involvement in a range of extracurricular activities. The scholarship is renewable for four years provided recipients remain in good academic standing and are responsible members of the campus and larger communities. Recipients will be selected by the director of financial aid.

Margery Cruikshank Bish Scholarship

This fund was established in 2011 by Margery Cruikshank Bish. Mrs. Bish earned her bachelor of arts degree from Westminster College in 1948 and her master of education degree from Pennsylvania State University. The fund honors the memory of Margery's sister, Mary Esther Cruikshank Halstead. Both Margery and Mary Esther devoted their professional lives to educating children. Income from the fund is awarded as scholarship assistance to a second-year student enrolled as an education major interested in pursuing a career as an elementary or secondary teacher. This award is intended to provide assistance to a student with demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. The award will be renewable for the third and fourth years of study provided the recipient remains in good academic standing and as an education major. The award will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid working in cooperation with the chair of the education department.

Dr. Edgar Black ’69 & LaDonna Stoops Black Scholarship

A native of Apollo, Pennsylvania, Dr. Edgar Black majored in chemistry at Westminster College. His ultimate career was in internal medicine as a clinician, educator and administrator. Mrs. LaDonna Stoops Black, from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, had a career as a technical illustrator and scientific editor. The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial aid to a deserving student from Western Pennsylvania planning to enter a current, critical needs profession. At the time of establishment, such professions would include educators (teachers), nurses, mental health and substance abuse counselors, and statisticians.

Hilda Catherine Black Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 by a gift from William T. Black ’55 and his wife, Patricia Thomas Black. The fund was created as a memorial to Mr. Black’s mother, Hilda Catherine Black (1897-1979). Hilda Catherine Black was a 1914 graduate of Collins (Ohio) High School and a 1916 graduate of Kent State Normal School. In 1949, Mrs. Black earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Kent State University and began her lifelong commitment to teaching. She was an educator at Benjamin Franklin Junior High School in New Castle, Pa., from 1949 until her retirement in 1962. Income from the fund is awarded annually to a fourth-year education major with demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. An overall GPA of 3.50 or better is required. First preference is given to graduates from New Castle High School; second preference is given to graduates from other high schools within Lawrence County, Pa. The recipient of the Hilda Catherine Black Scholarship is selected by the chair of the Department of Education in consultation with the director of financial aid.

William E. Blackburn Annual Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this Fund was established in 2022 by David & Kathleen (Kappy) Sarver in support of the mission of Westminster College and the opportunities that education and a strong work ethic can provide. This award honors the life of William (Bill) E. Blackburn who was Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds at Westminster for forty years. He had a commitment to excellence at Westminster and the community. He held high expectations and taught life lessons to students who worked with him. Those lessons and the desire to instill them in others is why this scholarship was established and honors his memory. The William E. Blackbum Annual Fund Scholarship is an effort to broaden traditionally underrepresented populations in the nursing and education programs at Westminster College. In establishing this award, it is the intent of the donors that the student(s) who receive this award will be in a position to graduate from Westminster College with no educational debt. This scholarship will be awarded to a first-generation student who is planning for a career in the field of nursing or education.

Donald P. Blayney '73 Arts & Cultural Heritage Internship

Recognizing the value of experiential internship opportunities as a way for students to enhance their classroom study through the exploration of career options and acquisition of professional skills, and recognizing that in today's working environment, significant expense can be associated with high-quality internship experiences. Donald P. Blayney '73 has endowed this fund to support students as outlined below. Income from this fund will be used annually to provide competitive funding for a student who obtains an eligible, credit-worthy unpaid history/liberal arts-related internship. Preference will be given to a student interning at a National Archive Museum, research facility, Presidential Library, or any Smithsonian Affiliation. The sponsorship is administered through the Westminster College Career Center where an application process requiring a personal statement, resume and unofficial transcript is in place together with an established timeline for application submission.

Francis A. Bonadio Scholarship

This fund was established in 1999 through contributions from the Community Scholarship Benefit “An Evening of Music” which honored Mr. Bonadio, a New Castle resident, businessman, and philanthropist. Income from the fund provides scholarships for Lawrence and/or Mercer County students selected on the basis of scholarship and financial need. The recipient is to be determined by the director of financial aid.

Wilson M. Botsford Scholarship

This fund was established in 1980 in honor of Mr. Botsford, a resident of Carnegie, Pa., on the Golden Anniversary of his graduation from Westminster by his classmates. Income from the fund will be awarded annually to deserving students with financial need.

Elise Braun Academic Assistance Fund

This fund is in memory of Elsie Braun ’27, who was a teacher and counselor at Moon High School in Coraopolis, Pa. It was established in 1990 through a bequest from Elmer E. Braun.

Laura Belle (Faupel) Bretsnyder Scholarship

This fund was established in 2020 by Mrs. Virginia Sheppard to honor her mother, Laura Belle (Faupel) Bretsnyder. Mrs. Bretsnyder enjoyed people as evidenced by her bookkeeping career, many church and Masonic activities, as well as serving as a house mother in Browne Hall at Westminster in the late 1960s. While at Westminster, she appreciated plays, musicals, and traveling to Europe. She began a legacy of family members attending Westminster.

Dr. Virginia A. Bridges Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 by her nieces, Karen Artino of Tampa, Fla., and Debra O'Conner of St. Petersburg, Fla. The scholarship is intended as a memorial tribute to Dr. Bridges, an alumna of the Class of 1948, and in recognition of her love of music and her dedication to excellence in higher education. Dr. Bridges was a longtime professor at the University of South Florida where she served as associate dean in the College of Fine Arts. Income from the fund is awarded annually to a first-year music education major with demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. The recipient of the award will be assured of assistance throughout his/her years at Westminster provided the student remains in good academic standing and remains enrolled as a music education major. The award will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Edith Petrie Brown Scholarship Fund

This fund, established by bequest in 1985, is unrestricted.

Edward N. Brown Memorial Scholarship

Family members established this fund in 1988 as a memorial to Edward N. Brown. Mr. Brown was a 1927 graduate who went on to teach chemistry at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The income is awarded annually to a chemistry student with demonstrated financial need.

Lillian R. Brown Scholarship

Established in 1992 by her estate, this scholarship is unrestricted.

Paul E. Brown Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1985 by his family, friends, and former students. Mr. Brown taught mathematics at Westminster from 1947 until his retirement in 1976. Income from the fund is awarded annually to a junior on the basis of merit and academic achievement in mathematics.

The Gary D. Brown '71 Emergency Fund

This fund was established in 2014 by Gary Brown, an alumnus of the Class of 1971 with a B.A. in business administration and management. Gary has remained committed to students and the mission of Westminster College throughout his life and has been a long-time member of the college's Board of Trustees and extensively involved with the Towering Titan Organization. As a student, he was an outstanding basketball player, and in 2010, inducted into the Titan Sports Hall of Fame. Income from the fund shall be used to provide financial assistance toward expenses relevant to the student's ability to fulfill his or her responsibility as a student.

Jane Smiley Brownlee Scholarship

This fund was created in 1995 by the Rev. Joseph T. Brownlee through a charitable remainder unitrust. Rev. Brownlee’s wish was to create the fund in honor and in memory of his wife, Jane Smiley Brownlee ’36. Upon his death in 2002, Westminster College began to receive income from the fund to grant scholarship aid. The income from the fund will be used in accordance with the following priorities. First priority to benefit students from the six churches named in the charitable remainder unitrust, representing the six churches served by Rev. Brownlee throughout his ministry: The Presbyterian Church of Plumville, Pa.; The New Lisbon Presbyterian Church of Lisbon, Ohio; The Unity Presbyterian Church of Cambridge, Ohio; The Highland- Sixth Presbyterian Church of Cleveland, Ohio; The Grace Presbyterian Church of Martins Ferry, Ohio; and The Nobleton Community Church of Nobleton, Fla. If income remains after the first priority, second priority is to benefit students of Lawrence County. If income remains after the second priority, third priority is to benefit any deserving students consistent with the scholarship policies of the College. Awards will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

John and Clara Bruhn Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1975 by Caroline Bruhn '26, in memory of her parents. The income from this fund is used to aid students with creative abilities and financial need. First preference is given to students majoring in art. Secondary preference is to be given to art minors, or theatre, music, or public relations majors.

Dr. Jay D. Buchanan ’66 & Elaine Rhinesmith Buchanan ’66 Scholarship

The Dr. Jay and Elaine Buchanan Scholarship, inaugurated in 2024, stands as a testament to the benevolence of 1966 graduates Dr. Jay and Elaine Buchanan, distinguished alumni of Westminster College and fervent advocates of lifelong learning. Their dedication to education transcends generations, inspiring the establishment of this scholarship to nurture future scholars. The Buchanan Scholarship, founded upon the Buchanan couple’s shared values of learning and service, is for aspiring scholars, empowering them to pursue their educational dreams and contribute meaningfully to society, echoing the legacy of Dr. Jay and Elaine Buchanan. This scholarship aims to acknowledge the value of a liberal arts education and the key role it plays in lifelong learning. This scholarship will offer financial support to a deserving Westminster College student who possesses both the interest and determination to pursue a higher education degree but lacks the necessary financial resources to do so. By providing this assistance, this scholarship seeks to empower motivated individuals to achieve their academic goals and unlock opportunities that might otherwise be difficult due to financial constraints.

Robert W. Buehner, Jr. and Robin Emily Buehner Memorial Scholarship

The Robin Emily Buehner Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Robin's parents, Robert W. Buehner, Jr. '75, and Alice J. Buehner as part of Ever Higher: The Campaign for Westminster College. The fund is a memorial to Robin who departed this life at age 16 on Dec. 15, 2008. Robin was known for her kind spirit and gentle nature. Income from the fund is awarded annually to a third or fourth-year political science or criminal justice studies major who embodies Robin's qualities of caring and compassion for others. The recipient will have demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. The award will be renewable provided the recipient remains in good academic standing. Mr. and Mrs. Buehner's intention is to provide scholarship assistance to future Westminster students, and at the same time, to express affection and admiration to special colleagues, professors, instructors, coaches, classmates, and friends who have throughout the years exhibited the Westminster College Winning Tradition in their personal and professional lives. In addition, funding the scholarship was given as a challenge to the members of the Class of 1975 for campaign participation. The selection of the recipient of this award is made at the discretion of Mr. Bradley Tokar for so long as he is employed by Westminster College in any capacity in consultation with the director of financial aid. In the event that Mr. Tokar is no longer employed at Westminster College in any capacity, then his position in this matter shall be filled by the director of admissions. Mr. Tokar and his successor shall follow the criteria set forth by the creators of the scholarship fund.

Fred L. and June McCall Burns and Family Scholarship

On behalf of Dr. Max H. Burns ’56, a scholarship in memory of his parents was established in 1999. The scholarship will be awarded to students in the academic fields of music, drama, or mathematics, or in the education fields of music, drama, or mathematics. The recipient should be selected by a committee comprised of the chair of these departments and the family member representing the family of Fred L. Burns.

Alma Peters Burry Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship fund, established in May 2000, is in honor and memory of Alma Peters Burry by Dean and Carole Burry Forsythe ’62 ’63 and Karen Forsythe ’87 for her dedication to her faith, family and higher education. It is designated for a female elementary education major from Lawrence County of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. (first choice) or other Christian denominations who demonstrates financial need from a single-parent family. The student(s) is to be selected by the chair of the Department of Education and the director of financial aid.

John S. Campbell Jr. and Gertrude T. Campbell Educational Trust

This fund was established in 1980 by bequest from Mrs. Campbell. Income from this fund is used to aid men or women students who are United States citizens and who are residents of Butler County, Pa. Selection of recipients is on the basis of scholastic ability, general aptitude, and financial need.

Rex W. Campbell Rotary Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2000 by the New Wilmington Rotary Club in memory of the life and work of Rex W. Campbell ’75, a Rotarian and community leader. Income from this fund will provide scholarship aid for students from the Northwest Pennsylvania Rotary District. Preference will be given to students who have financial need and who best exemplify the ideals of Rotary. This will be based on school and community activities as well as personal recommendations and will be determined by the director of financial aid.

C. Rudolph and Evelyn Swanson Carlin Scholarship

Established in 1990, this scholarship is awarded to a needy student and may be awarded to the same student for four years. Determination is made by the Office of Financial Aid.

Leonard M. Carroll Endowed Scholars Program

This fund was established in 2012 by Leonard M. Carroll. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid based on financial need. No award shall be made until such time as the fund generates sufficient income to finance one or more scholarships in an amount up to fifty percent (50%) of the annual published tuition of the College. Recipients must have a high school GPA of 3.00 or better. The award will be made for four (4) academic years provided the scholarship student remains in good academic standing. Scholarship students who shall receive the award shall be known as Carroll Scholars and shall be selected by the College in accordance with the following: first preference will be given to students residing in the following boroughs and townships in Clarion County and Venango County, Pa.: Foxburg, Knox and St. Petersburgh boroughs and Beaver, Richland and Salem townships in Clarion County, and Emlenton Borough and Richland Township in Venango County. After all scholarship needs are met for students residing in the boroughs and townships in Clarion County and Venango County, Pa., referred to above, preference will be given to students residing elsewhere in Clarion County and Venango County, Pa. After all scholarship needs are met for students residing in Clarion County and Venango County, Pa., preference will next be given to students residing in Bradford County, Crawford County, Jefferson County, Mercer County and Warren County, Pa.

William G. and Evelyn Means Carson Scholarship

The William G. Carson Scholarship Fund at Westminster College was established in 1997 in memory of William G. “Pinky” Carson ’37 by his family and friends, then renamed as a memorial tribute to his wife, Evelyn Lucille Means Carson who died Aug. 8, 2008. This award is made available to a student from first preference Lawrence and/or Mercer counties, second preference Pennsylvania. He/she must be in good academic standing (3.00 GPA), with special consideration given to students demonstrating financial need. The award is administered by the director of financial aid and selection of the recipient confirmed with the chair of the appropriate department.

Dr. Thomas W. Carver Scholarship

Dr. Thomas Carver served as Dean of Students at Westminster College from 1970-1978. He was known for his professionalism and dedication to the students and community of Westminster. Dr. Carver left an indelible impression on his staff and student workers, many of whom pursued careers in higher education and achieved professional success in student affairs. During his eight years as Dean of Students, Dr. Carver exemplified true leadership through his vibrant personality and personable demeanor. Although Dr. Carver was only at Westminster for eight years, he considered himself a Titan until his passing in 2023. This scholarship is endowed in his honor by Dr. Thomas L. Bost ’74 and Mrs. Diann Bost. The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial assistance to a worthy, motivated individual in the achievement of their undergraduate degree at Westminster College who has the ability, but not the financial resources to attend college.

Lawrence A. Chase Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2013 by Birgit Chase to honor the life of her husband, Lawrence A. Chase. Mr. Chase, an alumnus from the Class of 1962, received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. He remained committed to the mission of Westminster College throughout his lifetime and served as a regional volunteer for Westminster's Heritage Campaign in the 1990s. Income from the fund will be used to provide assistance to a first-year student. Selection will be based upon academic merit and demonstrated financial need. The award is renewable each year provided that the recipient remains in good academic standing. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Dr. Chester and Yvonne Vance Chichin Endowed Scholarship

This fund was established in 2013 by Dr. Chester J. Chichin and Yvonne Vance Chichin M '69. Income from the fund will be awarded as scholarship assistance to a student meeting all the following criteria: an incoming or current Westminster College student; a student pursuing an undergraduate degree in either elementary or secondary education; a student with demonstrated financial need. This award will be renewable throughout the recipient's years at Westminster College provided he/she remains as an education major in good academic standing. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Dr. Wayne H. Christy '38 Memorial Scholarship

In 2016, friends and family members established this renewable merit-based scholarship for incoming freshmen who graduated from high school in good academic standing and planning to major in a discipline in science, math, the arts, religion, or technology. This was the year of the 30th anniversary of the Dr. Wayne Christy Memorial Lecture series and the scholarship is a memorial to Dr. Wayne H. Christy '38. Dr. Christy began his career at Westminster in 1942 as Dean of Men and as an instructor in the Bible department. He later served as chair of the religion department from 1954 until his retirement in 1983. He exercised his love of sport as an assistant coach for men's baseball and as head coach for women's softball (1980-1985). He and his wife, Lola (Sewall) Christy '34 extended the gift of hospitality by opening their home to students near and far. "Doc" Christy exhibited honor, fairness, and good humor throughout his life journey.

This fund was established in October 2001 in honor of the 50th reunion celebration for the Class of 1951, by members of the class. The earnings from this endowed fund are to be given to students based on financial need at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Class of 1952 Scholarship

This endowed scholarship fund was established in October 2002 by the Class of 1952 in honor of its 50th reunion celebration. This fund is to be used for students based on financial need per the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Class of 1955 Scholarship

This fund was established in September 2005 in honor of the 50th reunion celebration of the Class of 1955. The scholarship is to support students with the greatest financial need and is awarded at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Class of 1957 Scholarship

This fund was established in September 2007 in honor of the 50th reunion celebration of the Class of 1957. The scholarship has no restrictions and is awarded at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

In 2010, the College adopted Advantage: Westminster, A Strategic Plan 2010-2020. One of the four key initiatives states, “Westminster College shall remain a high-value liberal arts college, providing recognized excellence in undergraduate education at a competitive price.” The scholarship fund was established by members of the Class of 1961 as a gift to the College with two specific purposes: to honor and recognize their Golden Anniversary Celebration in October of 2011 and to support the College’s statement of vision and commitment to the quality of higher education in the future. Income from the fund is awarded annually as scholarship assistance to a student(s) with demonstrated academic achievement, financial need and leadership qualities. The award will be renewable provided the recipient remains in good academic standing. The award will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Class of 1964 Intern Sponsorship

This fund was established by members of the Class of 1964 as a gift to the College in honor of their Golden Anniversary Celebration in October 2014. Recognizing the value of experiential internship opportunities as a way for students to enhance their classroom study through the exploration of career options and acquisition of professional skills and recognizing that in today's working environment, significant expense can be associated with high-quality internship experiences, the Class of 1964 has chosen to endow The Class of 1964 Intern Sponsorship Fund. Income from this fund will be used annually to provide competitive funding for students who accept eligible, credit-worthy unpaid internships. The sponsorship is administered through the Westminster College Career Center where an application process requiring a personal statement, resume and unofficial transcript is in place together with an established timeline for application submission. Applications are reviewed by a committee of Career Center counselors, Westminster College faculty and College administrators. Final selection is at the discretion of the internship coordinator.

Class of 1965 Pay It Forward Fund

This fund was established by members of the Class of 1965 as a gift to Westminster in honor of their Golden Anniversary in October 2015. Monies from this fund will be used to provide financial assistance to students in good academic standing who demonstrate a high financial need to continue their education at Westminster. The award will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid. Alumni who are past recipients of the fund will be encouraged to "Pay it forward" after graduation or completion of their tenure at Westminster so that future Westminster students showing similar financial need can also receive similar support.

Class of 1966 Scholarship Fund

This scholarship was formalized in 2017 through gifts given by members of the Class of 1966 in celebration of their 50th year reunion. This scholarship supports the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best. The liberal arts tradition is the foundation of the curriculum continually designed to service this mission in a rapidly changing world. The College sees the well-educated person as one whose skills are cmplemented by ever-developing values and ideals identified in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

Class of 1967 Scholarship

This fund was formalized in 2018 through gifts given by members of the Class of 1967 in celebration of their 50th year reunion. Income from the fund shall be used to provide a renewable, need-based scholarship to students entering their sophomore year who are in good academic standing, demonstrate leadership characteristics with an involvement in extracurricular activities and intend on completing their undergraduate education at Westminster College.

Class of 1974 Endowed Scholarship

This fund is established by the generous donations of members of the Class of 1974 in celebration of their 50th class reunion. The fund is established for first-year students to provide an additional source of aid to incoming first year students requiring financial assistance.

Class of 1976 Scholarship

Established in 1982, it provides aid, based on financial need, to entering first-year students in the top 10 percent of their high school classes.

Class of 1978 Scholarship Fund

This fund was established by members of the Class of 1978 as a gift to the College in recognition of their upcoming 50th reunion in 2028. Income from this Fund is distributed yearly to benefit one or more first year students who, like many in the Class of 1978 once did, need financial assistance to pursue their education. The Scholarship is awarded to first year students who had a 3.0 or higher grade point average upon being accepted as a Westminster student. George B. Clemens and Dorothy M. Clemens Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1979 by former students and friends of Dr. Clemens, professor of French at Westminster from 1962-64 and 1966-77. The fund was renamed in 2004 in memory of both George B. Clemens and his wife, Dorothy M. Clemens, a longtime friend of Westminster College. Income from the fund is awarded annually to students of foreign languages. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Charles E. and Harriette R. Cochran Scholarship

This fund was established in 1996 by Harriette Robinson Cochran ’33 and her late husband, Charles E. Cochran ’33, in appreciation for their educational opportunities at Westminster College. The fund will provide a scholarship each year to a first-year student with financial need. The recipient will be assured of assistance throughout his or her years at Westminster College provided a 2.50 GPA is maintained.

Thomas C. Cochran and Olive P. Cochran Educational Fund

This fund was established in 2010 through a gift from Thomas C. Cochran Jr. The fund will serve as a memorial to his parents, Thomas C. Cochran and Olive P. Cochran, Westminster alumni from the Class of 1901 and 1903 respectively. Income from the fund will be used for the award of academic scholarships in such amount and for such period of time as shall be set by the College. Preference shall be given to scholarship applicants interested in economics, law or political science. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Clara E. Cockerille Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1976 by former students and friends of Dr. Cockerille. A master teacher and nationally recognized educator, she was professor of education at Westminster from 1960-74. The income provides scholarships to promising students preparing for careers in teaching

Charles S. Coen and Mary Coen Scholarship

This memorial scholarship was established in 2004 with a gift from the Charles S. Coen and Mary Coen Family Foundation of Washington, Pa. The fund will support scholarships for students with financial need from Washington County who demonstrate academic promise and leadership through participation in extracurricular and service activities. Recipients will be selected by the director of financial aid.

Cole Hughes Musser Newcomb Scholarship

This fund was established in 2008 by Peter and Tamara Musser in honor and memory of members of the Cole–Hughes–Musser–Newcomb families who believed in, attended, supported, or served as faculty or staff at institutions of higher learning. Income from this fund is awarded annually to assist students with financial need. The decision shall be made by the director of financial aid.

Jane R. Coleman Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2011 through a gift received from the estate of Jane R. Coleman, an alumna from the Class of 1949. Miss Coleman graduated with a bachelor of business administration from Westminster College and continued her education at Carnegie Mellon where she received her master of science degree. Miss Coleman held executive positions in the Pittsburgh business and industrial world, retiring in 1990 as vice president/treasurer of Ketchum, Inc., a leading professional fundraising firm. Miss Coleman was devoted to Westminster College having served in a variety of volunteer positions, including Alumni Council and the Annual Fund Board. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1991-1996. This estate gift was intended to honor the memory of Miss Coleman’s parents, both Westminster College graduates: J. Harvey Coleman ’17 and H. Elizabeth Long Coleman ’16. Income from the fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students with demonstrated financial need and academic merit. Janet Owen Collier M’65 Scholarship

The Janet Owen Collier M’65 Scholarship was founded in 2024 with a profound belief in the transformative power of education. Established by Janet Owen Collier M’65, this scholarship aims to provide financial support to outstanding undergraduate students pursuing higher education at Westminster College. Janet Collier’s commitment to education stems from her own experience as a student at Westminster, where she earned her master’s degree in 1965. Driven by the desire to alleviate the burden of student debt, the scholarship fund underscores the importance of empowering future generations through access to education. Janet’s dedication to education extends beyond her own academic achievements; she went on to dedicate numerous years to the field of teaching at Boardman High School in Boardman, Ohio. The establishment of this scholarship embodies Janet’s enduring commitment to fostering educational opportunities and reflects Westminster College’s ongoing mission to nurture and support students in their pursuit of academic excellence. Through this scholarship, Janet’s legacy continues to inspire and uplift aspiring scholars, ensuring that they have the resources needed to achieve their educational aspirations and make meaningful contributions to society.

Clifford A. Collins Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2007 upon the death of Lula K. Collins as a memorial tribute to Clifford A. Collins, an alumnus of the Class of 1930. Income from the fund will be used to provide assistance to worthy and qualified first-year students entering Westminster who are graduates of any public high school within Mercer County, Pa. Scholarship recipients must have a minimum recalculated GPA of 3.50. Awards are renewable for up to four years provided the students remain in good academic standing and are responsible citizens of the campus and larger community. All awards are made made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

M. Earl Collins Memorial Scholarship

This unrestricted fund was established in 1981 by Mary Dixon Collins, family and friends. Dr. Collins was president of Tarkio and Missouri Valley colleges and a good friend of Westminster.

Duane L. Conway Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2011 by a bequest received from the Estate of Duane L. Conway. Mr. Conway was graduated from Slippery Rock University in 1956 and received a master’s degree in counseling from Westminster College in 1961. He retired from North Allegheny School District after a 30-year career in education. He began as a social studies and history teacher and ended his career as a secondary guidance counselor. Income from the fund is awarded as scholarship assistance for students, both undergraduate and graduate, pursuing a career in secondary guidance counseling. The award will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Ryan M. Core Endowed Scholarship

This fund was established in 2007 through generous contributions from Gerald M. and Judith A. Walsh to honor Ryan M. Core, a member of the Class of 1997, and in appreciation for Ryan’s educational experience at Westminster College. Income from the fund is awarded annually as academic assistance to a student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities through involvement in a wide range of extracurricular activities. First preference is given to a student entering the College as a graduate from Poland Seminary High School, Poland, Ohio, or Cardinal Mooney High School, Youngstown, Ohio. Second preference is given to a student from any high school in either Mahoning or Columbiana counties. The award is made on the basis of financial need and at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

James Corry Religion Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded annually to the tuition of a senior majoring in religion or Christian education who has demonstrated commitment to a church-related vocation. Awarded primarily on the basis of financial need, preference will be given to the child of an ordained minister. Application should be made during the junior year by applicant with a minimum GPA of 3.00.

James C. and Kay Barrett Craig Scholarship

The fund was established in 2006 in memory of James C. Craig and Kay Barrett Craig. Mrs. Craig was admitted to Westminster in 1954 and completed two full years of study. Although family responsibilities prevented her from completing her undergraduate degree, Mrs. Craig took pride in her continuing affiliation with the College. Mrs. Craig regretted that she was never able to complete her degree, but she took advantage of every opportunity to further her education and career training. She was an enthusiastic lifelong learner and generously shared that passion with family and friends. As a memorial to Mrs. Craig and her regard for the importance of education, income from the fund will be awarded to a deserving full-time female student who demonstrates financial need. First preference will be given to a female non-traditional student pursuing an undergraduate degree in any field of study. Second preference will be given to a female traditional student who plans to enter the medical field. The award will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Dr. Daniel G. Crozier, Jr. Music Scholarship

This fund was established in 1998 by the McFeely-Rogers Foundation to honor Dr. Daniel G. Crozier Jr. ’87. Income from this fund supports a renewable annual scholarship for a music student with financial need from the Latrobe area, Westmoreland County, or southwest/western Pennsylvania (respectively).

Dr. Carolyn K. Cuff '78 Scholarship Fund

This Fund was established in 2018 by alumni friends and family in honor of Dr. Carolyn Cuff '78 and in support of the mission of Westminster College; to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best. The liberal arts tradition is the foundation of the curriculum continually designed to service this mission in a rapidly changing world. The College sees the well-educated person as one whose skills are complemented by ever-developing values and ideals identified in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Income from the Fund shall be used to provide a scholarship to a second-year student (not necessarily a sophomore). It could also be a freshman who is working their way back from hardship or leave of absence, who has an interest in pursuing a career in math, computer science or physics or is a student in the department that includes these areas of study.

Erwin Cummins Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1974 by a bequest of Mrs. Lena Dodds Littell in memory of her brother-in-law, Judge Erwin Cummins. The income is to be applied toward scholarships for young men attending the College and preparing for the gospel ministry or for the mission field.

Madeline Blackadore Dahlburg '40 & Lt. Col. Donald Russell Dahlburg

This fund was created by Madeline Blackadore Dahlburg and U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Donald Russell ("Russ") Dahlburg as an expression of their deep gratitude and love for their alma mater. Madeline, a music education major from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Russ, a business major from Lakewood, Ohio, met at the Old 77 Gymnasium (now the Marge Walker Recreation Center), graduated with the distinguished Class of 1940, and were married by College President Robert Galbreath in 1948. While studying in New Wilmington, they immersed themselves in campus life: Madeline as a Chi Omega sorority member, student government leader, and Glee Club and Orpheus Choir performer, and Russ as a founding member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity chapter, business manager for the Argo school yearbook, and Honor Roll student. From World War II to their professional and personal lives, they found the principles, values and ideals instilled in them at Westminster to be an unerringly true guide. The purpose of the Blackadore-Dahlburg scholarship, which honors the Westminster College Class of 1940 and is to be awarded at the discretion of the director of financial aid, is to promote the pursuit of higher education, a diverse and inclusive student body, and Westminster College's mission and liberal arts tradition. Income from this fund will provide scholarship assistance to Westminster College students who are in good academic standing and in need of financial assistance to attend Westminster College.

Alan B. and Eleanor M. Davis Scholarship

This Fund was established in 2019 through an estate gift from Donald Post Lincoln, Jr., and Carolyn Hope Davis Lincoln, Dr. Davis' daughter, in support of the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best. The liberal arts tradition is the foundation of the curriculum continually designed to service this mission in a rapidly changing world. The College sees the well-educated person as one whose skills are complemented by ever-developing values and ideals identified in the Judea-Christian tradition.

Anna Thompson Davis Scholarship

Established in 1992 by the estate of Mrs. Davis to benefit students majoring in education.

Donald J. Davis Scholarship

This fund was established in 2006 by Donald J. Davis of Sarasota, Fla., an alumnus from the Class of 1949. Income from the fund will be awarded annually to a student based upon financial need. No religious, sexual orientation, racial or grade average criteria shall be considered in the selection process. The recipient will be assured of assistance throughout his/her time at Westminster provided that he/she remains in good academic standing. The award is given to a student whose primary interest and study is the vocal arts. The selection committee for this scholarship shall include a department member chosen by the chairperson of the Department of Music and the directors of the vocal and choral sections. The committee will work in cooperation with the director of financial aid and will serve without remuneration, determine terms of service, and annually rotate the chairperson duties of the committee.

Helen Towner Davison Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1980 by her husband, William B. Davison, and sons, William B. Davison II '62 and Robert V. Davison, in her memory. Mrs. Davison was a 1936 Westminster alumna. This fund annually assists students with ability, character, and financial need.

William B. Davison II Scholarship

This fund was established in 1981 by a bequest from William B. Davison in honor of his son, a member of the Westminster Class of 1962. This fund aids students with ability, character, and financial need.

Phyllis A. (Hawkins) Devlin '81 Scholarship Fund

This is an endowed scholarship in honor of Phyllis Devlin '81, established in 2016 by her late parents, Earl F. Hawkins and Joan Hawkins. This scholarship will provide funds to students from an Ohio high school who are pursuing a degree in education.

H. Dewey DeWitt Scholarship

Established in 1993 by family, friends, and colleagues in honor of Professor Emeritus H. Dewey DeWitt, who taught chemistry at Westminster from 1956 until his retirement in 1993. The recipient should be a junior or senior student who has performed well in chemistry. Financial need is not necessarily a consideration. Selection of the recipient will be at the discretion of the Chemistry Department.

Dietz Sullivan Biology Research Experience Endowed Fund

The Dietz Sullivan Biology Research Experience Endowed Fund stands as a testament to Fred and Carol Sullivan’s enduring love for each other and their deep connection to Westminster College. This fund not only honors their commitment to education but also ensures that future generations of students will benefit from their generosity. Carol Dietz Sullivan, a 1959 Westminster College graduate, earned her degree in biology. This scholarship celebrates her academic journey and achievements, reflecting her interest in the biological sciences. Her legacy is commemorated through this fund, which aims to foster a spirit of inquiry and discovery among students. Fred Sullivan had a distinguished career at Dow Chemical, where his professional success is remembered alongside Carol’s academic legacy. The Dietz Sullivan Biology Research Experience Endowed Fund’s primary objective is to provide resources that enable Westminster College students and faculty to collaborate on biology research projects.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Dodds Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1976 by a bequest from Mr. and Mrs. Dodds of New Castle, Pa. The income provides scholarships for students who demonstrate scholastic ability and have financial need. Recipients are selected by the student aid committee. The late Mr. and Mrs. Dodds were lifelong residents of New Castle, where he served as county controller of Lawrence County for 27 years.

Domeracki Family Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this scholarship was established in 2022 by Craig & Susan Domeracki, to provide financial assistance for a promising student seeking higher education who has the ability but not the financial resources to attend college. The primary objective of this endowment is to support a first generation, Westminster student(s) with financial need from the Erie, PA area who is concentrating in the fields of Economics, Political Science or Nursing.

Dorman-Gasiewicz Nursing Scholarship Fund

This Fund was established in 2017 by Philip W. and Beth Gasiewicz, to assist deserving students as they pursue a career in the field of nursing and to honor the life work of Beverly Dorman and Beth Gasiewicz. This Fund is in support of the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best.

Daryl J. Downey Memorial Scholarship

The fund was established in 2009 through a bequest from the estate of Daryl J. Downey of Greensburg, Pa. Ms. Downey was an alumna from the Class of 1949 having received a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. She retired as an engineer with Bell Telephone. Income from the fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to a second, third or fourth year female student based upon financial need and academic merit. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Marmora Maude Dunlap and Dr. Edward A. Dunlap '32 Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 through a bequest from the Edward A. Dunlap Trust. Additional contributions were received from family and friends as a memorial to Dr. Dunlap following his death in March 2004. Income from the fund will be used for third- and fourth- year science majors (chemistry, biology, physics). Scholarships shall be awarded on the basis of financial need, and the decision shall be made by the chairs of the respective departments and the director of financial aid.

Dorothy M. Durek '69 Endowed Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this Scholarship was established in 2023 in memory of Dorothy M. Durek to provide financial assistance for a promising undergraduate student seeking higher education at Westminster College. Ms. Durek graduated from Westminster College in 1969 and was a teacher in the Sharon School District for many years.

Eberly Family Scholarship

Established in 1992, by the Eberly Foundation, recipient(s) will demonstrate superior academic achievement, good moral character, financial need, and reside within the geographic preference area defined in the following order of priority: Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties within Pennsylvania; and then other counties within Pennsylvania and West Virginia; and thereafter students from any other state of the U.S.A. First preference, however, shall be given to those persons whose principal residence is in Fayette County, Pa.

Education Fund of the Class of 1927

This fund was established in 1998 by the estate of George F. Bolinger. The income from the fund is to be used for scholarship purposes for needy and deserving students. The decision shall be made by the director of financial aid.

Mary McKinney Eichenauer Bible Awards

To promote interest in the study of the Bible, these awards were established in 1936 by J. B. Eichenauer of Pittsburgh in memory of his wife. Three prizes are announced at the Spring Honors Convocation. Prize winners are determined by the results of a competitive examination conducted by the Department of Religion, History, Philosophy and Classics.

J. Scott Eiler Scholarship

This fund was created in 1963 by a bequest from the estate of Mrs. Mildred E. Briggs of Ashaway, R.I., as a memorial to her brother.

Howard B. Eklund ’51 & Marietta Anderson Eklund ’51 Endowed Scholarship

Howard and Marietta (Anderson) Eklund met as students at Westminster College. With a strong belief in the value of education as well as the impact Westminster experiences can provide in your life, this scholarship was established in 2021, by their son, Robert Eklund to honor his parents.

G. Ross Ellis Memorial Scholarship

Family members and friends established this fund in 1991 in memory of G. Ross Ellis. From 1930 until his retirement in 1975, Mr. Ellis, a 1929 graduate, served Westminster first as a teacher of business and accounting, later as business manager and treasurer. Income from this fund is awarded annually to assist students with financial need.

Frank Emmanuel Memorial Football Fund

Established in 1992 by friends and family. Provides supplemental support for equipment and special services to the varsity football program.

Karen Campman Emmett ’75 & Paul V. Emmett Music Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2021, by Karen Campman Emmett '75 and husband Paul V. Emmett III. Karen graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Education/voice and taught vocal music, in the public schools, for 31 years. This scholarship will go to a rising Senior working toward a Bachelor of Music in Music Education Degree with a concentration in the choral/vocal area. First preference will be to a student with financial need, second preference will be to a student who does not demonstrate financial need. This award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid in collaboration with the chairperson of the Department of Music. This scholarship will be published annually in the Westminster College Scholarship Listing once the scholarship criteria is established and the Fund is fully endowed. If a change in circumstances should at some future time make it no longer the President of the College shall have the authority, after consulting first with (i) the living Donor; or if not feasible, second with (ii) the Board of Trustees of the College, to direct the income for purposes deemed to most closely correspond with the intentions of the Donor in fulfillment of the academic mission of Westminster College.

Rolland E. English Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 upon the death of Rolland E. Louden, a member of the Class of 1933. The fund is intended as a memorial tribute to Mr. Louden’s maternal uncle, Rolland E. English, a practicing attorney in Grove City, Pa., for many years. Mr. English served as a member of the Westminster College Board of Trustees for 24 years, from 1920-44. This scholarship is unrestricted, and income from the fund is awarded at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

The Entrepreneurial Values Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2022 by John G. Hepler, to provide financial assistance for a promising student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college. The primary objective of this endowment is to support Westminster student(s): with financial need who are participants in the Westminster Entrepreneurial Center (WEC), and to encourage the traits and behaviors that lead to success as an entrepreneur.

The Environment/Community Impact Scholarship

The Environment/Community Impact Scholarship Fund, will be established at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, with an initial gift established through the equal generosity of Craig & Sharon Dimon and David & Kathleen Sarver. This Fund, established in honor of Dr. Helen Boylan-Funari, will be in support of Westminster and the ongoing need to minimize students' college debt upon graduation. Dr. Helen Boylan-Funari, a first-generation college student, grew up in rural McKean County, PA, where the Allegheny National Forest was her playground and laboratory. She completed a B.S. in environmental science from Westminster College and a Ph.D. in environmental/analytical chemistry from Duquesne University. She returned to Westminster College as a faculty member in 2001 where she collaborates with students on hands-on learning related to the environment and the community.

Peter L. Evanoff Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1984 by members of his family and friends. Mr. Evanoff, a 1942 graduate of the College, was a Navy pilot in WWII. He was shot down over Taiwan on Oct. 13, 1944, after having participated in 42 combat missions. He was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and several Gold Stars. The scholarship each year is awarded to a student from Erie County, Pa.

Ever Higher General Scholarships

This fund was established in 2006 through an estate gift from an anonymous donor. Income from the fund is awarded annually to a student with financial need. The award will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Verna L. (Scarazzo) Fabian '52 Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2022 by Verna L. (Scarazzo) Fabian ‘52, Albert Fabian and Nicholas and Evelyn Scarazzo, to provide financial assistance for a promising student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources, to attend college. The mission of Westminster College is to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best, and the liberal arts tradition is the foundation of the curriculum continually designed to serve this mission in a rapidly changing world. The primary objective of this endowment is to support Westminster student(s) with financial need who are concentrating in the field of business.

Mary Lowe Fair Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2006 upon the death of Francis Fair, Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio. Income from the fund shall be used for scholarship aid for Native Americans or descendants of Native Americans of the lower 48 states attending Westminster College. The award will be made at the sole discretion of the director of financial aid. Income may not be used in any manner which would replace scholarship funds already allocated to a Native American of the lower 48 states, thereby indirectly adding the income of this Mary Lowe Fair Scholarship to the Westminster College general scholarship account. Income generated by this fund shall not, in any way either directly or indirectly, be employed for the use of students at Westminster College who are not Native Americans or descendants of Native Americans of the lower 48 states.

Justin J. Falgione Memorial Scholarship

The Justin J. Falgione Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2009 by the friends and family of Justin J. Falgione ’87 and is intended to honor Justin’s kind and generous heart and to keep his spirit alive through community involvement. Justin lived by the mantra: those that could give back to their community, should give back. Income from the fund will be awarded annually to a second, third or fourth year student with primary consideration given to assist a dedicated individual who majors in studies emphasizing public service. Additional consideration will be given to a student strongly considering a career in public service upon graduation. Scholarship recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 and have demonstrated their commitment to campus life as well as to the community at large. The recipient will be chosen by the director of financial aid.

Samuel A. and Janice C. Farmerie Education Scholarship

This fund, established in 1997, is for an education major or minor. At the discretion of the Department of Education and the Office of Financial Aid, one or two students will receive the funds, depending on the amount available, based on need. The recipient(s) should be a sophomore or junior with a 3.00 GPA.

Floy Robertson Ferguson Award

This fund, established by Robert D. Ferguson in 1974 in memory of his mother, provides for an award to the junior student who has made an outstanding contribution to college life. Neither financial need nor academic performance is a consideration in the selection.

James M. Ferguson Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, established in 1957, honors James M. Ferguson, president of the Board of Trustees, 1949-1957. The fund annually provides assistance to one or more students who have made an outstanding contribution to the College.

N. Craig Fetters, II '64 and Linda Wood Fetters '65 Intern Scholarship

Recognizing the value of experiential internship opportunities as a way for students to enhance their classroom study through the exploration of career options and acquisition of professional skills and recognizing that in today's work environment significant expense can be associated with high-quality internship experiences, Mr. & Mrs. N. Craig Fetters, II have chosen to endow The N. Craig Fetters, II '64 and Linda Wood Fetters '65 Intern Sponsorship Fund. Income from this Fund will be used annually to provide competitive fundraising for students who accept eligible, credit-worthy unpaid internships. The sponsorship is administered through the Westminster College Career Center where an application process requiring a personal statement, resume and unofficial transcript is in place together with an established timeline for application submission. Applications are reviewed by a committee of Career Center counselors, Westminster College faculty and College administrators. Final selection is at the discretion of the internship coordinator.

Fine Arts Endowed Scholarship

Income from the fund will be used to provide annual scholarship assistance to eligible fine art students, both established students and incoming students with demonstrated financial need. If, on an annual basis, more funds are available than can be awarded to eligible fine arts students, awards may be made to other students within the departmental area of communication studies, theatre and art for that particular year. Students receiving awards may continue to receive the awards while they make satisfactory progress toward their degree. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Donald R. Fishback '78 and Denise (Bowen) Fishback '78 Scholarship

This fund was established in 2017 by Donald R. and Denise (Bowen) Fishback in memory of David L. Bowen, a dedicated father and talented artist who always found humor in life's challenges. Donald R. Fishback CPA graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in business administration and a concentration in accounting. He grew up near Buffalo, N.Y., and began his career with Deloitte. In 1981, he began working for Moog Inc. and currently serves as the company's vice president and chief financial officer and as a director on their board. Denise (Bowen) Fishback grew up in Neshannock Township, Pa., graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in business adminisitration and spent her career in marketing. They are eternally grateful for their friendships formed while at Westminster and established this fund in hopes it would enable others to have the same type of life-enriching experiences they have enjoyed. Income from the fund shall be awarded to a rising senior in the school of business who is a well-rounded person, demonstrating high character, integrity, and leadership skills with a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.25 through fall semester of junior year, without regard to financial need but who will positively represent the values of Westminster College in the business world.

Gail Guidosh Flanigan '73 Endowed Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this Scholarship was established in 2021 by Kevin J. Flanigan in honor of his wife Gail, a 1973 graduate of Westminster College. This scholarship supports the mission of Westminster College and the opportunities that education and a strong work ethic can provide. This scholarship will be awarded to students who participate in vocal or instrumental music performance groups at the College.

Russel Forbes Memorial Fund

This fund was established in 1958 by friends of Russell L. Forbes, a Westminster alumnus of 1918. The income is used each year to provide a loan to a student majoring in political science.

John H. Forry Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1979 as a memorial to Dr. Forry by his wife, Kathryn Kuhns Forry of York, Pa. Dr. Forry joined the Westminster faculty in 1946 and became dean of the College and professor of English in 1953. After retiring from the deanship in 1961, he rejoined the English faculty until his death in 1965. Income from the fund is awarded annually to junior or senior English majors on the basis of merit and academic achievement.

Debora Swatsworth Foster Endowed Scholarship in Public Relations

This fund was established in 2013 by William R. Foster ’74 and Jared W. Foster ’08 to honor the extraordinary life of Debora Swatsworth Foster. Mrs. Foster received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Westminster College in 1974 and was employed by The H.J. Heinz Co. in Pittsburgh for 32 years. She rose to the position of vice president of corporate communications where her duties included coordinating the company’s global communications team and working with Heinz divisions throughout the world. Mrs. Foster served as a member of Westminster’s Board of Trustees and was elected as the first female chair of the Board in 2006. In 2012 The Foster Art Gallery located in Patterson Hall was named by the College to honor Mrs. Foster for her service and leadership, her professional accomplishments in corporate communication, and her kind and generous spirit. Debora S. Foster was known as an outstanding communicator and an individual of great class and dignity. The award will be made annually to two deserving students who mirror Mrs. Foster’s qualities of high character, integrity and leadership. One award will go to a third-year student majoring in public relations. This award is renewable for one year provided the recipient remains in good academic standing and enrolled as a public relations major. One award will go to a fourth- year student completing his/her major in public relations. Both award recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.00. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid working in cooperation with the chair of the Department of English and Public Relations and the public relations faculty.

Fowler-Liddle Memorial Scholarship

The recipient must be a graduate of Canfield High School or a high school located in Canfield, Ohio. First preference will be given to the student who has the highest average grades during the four years of high school. In the event that two or more students are deemed equally qualified, then the trustee will select the recipient by lot. The financial assistance will be for tuition, fees, books, food and housing, as well as other incidental expenses deemed appropriate by the trustee. The recipient will be assured of assistance for four consecutive years provided he/she maintains good academic standing. The College will select a recipient twice every four years.

William B. and Berryl N. Fox Scholarship

This fund was established in 1996 by their children and friends as a memorial of their 60th wedding anniversary. The income from the fund is to be awarded annually to a deserving student from Lawrence County.

Nathan and E. Lucile Beerbower Frey Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established in 2001 from Nathan and E. Lucile Beerbower Frey ’26, deceased 1994 and 2001, respectively. E. Lucile Beerbower Frey graduated from Westminster College in 1926 and served on the College faculty in the Department of Biology from 1947-1970. This scholarship fund is to benefit a junior or senior biology major with a 3.00 GPA. The recipient(s) is to be determined by the chair of the Department of Biology and the director of financial aid.

Friends of the Carillon Endowed Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 by gifts received from the "Friends of the Carillon." Interest from the fund is awarded each year at the discretion of the Department of Music and the director of financial aid to a responsible, enthusiastic student who will serve as the College Student Carillonneur. He/she will be responsible for playing appropriate carillon music for College events during the academic year. If needed, funds may be available for a promising student to receive carillon lessons in order to qualify for the scholarship award. (See letter of Intent in the Department of Music, Financial Aid Office, or Institutional Advancement Office).

John B. Fuoss '78 Leadership and Scholarship Fund

This merit-based scholarship was established in 2016 by John B. Fuoss to benefit a student in the School of Business, without regard to financial need. John graduated cum laude with a degree in Business Administration and was a member of the Titan Men's Varsity Golf team. He spent his entire career employed by Chubb Insurance Company. Candidates will be evaluated on the following criteria: academic achievement, leadership skills and commitment to and involvement in extracurricular activities.

Joseph R. Furno Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2003 under the will of Virginia N. Furno in memory of her late husband, Joseph R. Furno ’29, who served for 37 years as an educator and athletic coach in the Elizabeth Forward School District. Income from this fund will support scholarships for academically well-prepared students who have a minimum high school GPA of 3.00 in academic subjects, and also demonstrate leadership qualities through involvement in a range of extracurricular activities such as the National Honor Society and community activities, from the following Monongahela Valley school systems: Belle Vernon Area, Beth Center, Brownsville Area, California Area, Carmichaels Area, Charleroi, Clairton, Duquesne, Elizabeth Forward, Jefferson Morgan, Mapletown, McKeesport, Monesson, Ringgold, South Allegheny, Steel Valley, Thomas Jefferson, West Mifflin, Woodland Hills, and Yough. Preference will be given to students planning a career in teaching and education-related fields. Scholarships are renewable for four years provided recipients maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.90 or better and are good citizens of the campus and larger communities. Recipients will be selected by the director of financial aid.

Dr. Joseph B. Fusco '60 Endowed Scholarship

In deep appreciation and immense admiration for Coach Fusco's contributions to Westminster College, this scholarship was established by Steven D. Ferringer '82 and Brian T. Lohr '84, as well as other former Titan football players. It serves as a tribute to Coach Fusco and the thousands of lives he touched and is designed to afford Young Titans with financial need, financial support to help them achieve a Westminster education, which continues to instill the same values, morals and work ethic showcased by Joe Fusco, as a coach, mentor, friend, father, and teacher.

Betty Shaw Gamble Scholarship

Income from this fund, established in 1986, is awarded to students majoring in art, art history, or nursing.

Carolyn Porter Gardner Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2011 by Mr. and Mrs. J. Henry Gardner as a memorial tribute to their daughter, Carolyn Porter Gardner. Carolyn graduated from Penn Hills High School in 1967. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Westminster College in 1971 and her master’s degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1980. Carolyn devoted her professional life to educating children. In 1998, Carolyn was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She became a patient advocate pushing for research, development of innovative treatment and testing for the disease. She was instrumental in founding Pittsburgh’s chapter of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and served as its community outreach director. Carolyn lost her battle with cancer at age 54. Income from this fund is awarded as financial assistance to a male or female student who mirrors Carolyn’s passion for teaching and learning. The recipient will be enrolled as an elementary K-8 education major with demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. The award will be renewable throughout his or her years at Westminster College provided the recipient remains in good academic standing with continued financial need. The award will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

John M. '37 and Gerline H. Gehr Scholarship Fund

Income from this fund will provide scholarship assistance for a needy and deserving first-year student, with a preference to ministerial students. Selection will be based upon academic merit and demonstrated financial need and is renewable provided that the recipient remains in good academic standing.

Marshall A. and Beverly O. George Family Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2015 by Michael F. Lannon and Debra (George) Lannon '79 in memory of Debra's father, Marshall, and in honor of her mother, Beverly. First preference is given to students who graduated from Hempfield Area School District located in Greensburg, Pa., and second preference is given to students whose hometown is in Westmoreland County, Pa. Final consideration is given to students whose hometown is in Pennsylvania. This scholarship is based on financial need.

Oscar & Theresa Geroni Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2024 through the estate of Ms. Claudia Geroni M’83 in memory of her parents, Oscar and Theresa Geroni. Ms. Geroni spent over 35 years in education. She retired from West Middlesex School District, where she was employed for 30 years as a teacher and guidance counselor. It was her desire to provide financial assistance to promising Mercer County students seeking higher education who have the ability, but not the financial resources to attend college. Students will be selected based on their combined merits of scholarship, financial need and community service.

Mary Stewart Glenn Scholarship

This fund was established in 1996 to honor the memory of her father, L. E. Stewart '05, and her nephew, Joe Stewart '63, and their accomplishments in track at Westminster College. Recipients will demonstrate financial need, involvement in extracurricular activities, and above average academic ability.

Lois (Rennie) Guehring ’64 Endowed Scholarship

The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial assistance for a promising undergraduate student seeking higher education. With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this Scholarship was established in 2022, by James T. and Lois (Rennie) Guehring '64, to provide financial assistance for a promising undergraduate student seeking higher education at Westminster College. This Fund was formalized in support of Westminster and the ongoing need to minimize student's college debt upon graduation. The mission of Westminster College, to help students develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics that have distinguished human beings at their best, will be supported through this endowed scholarship. P. Richard and Linda '67 Hackenburg Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this fund was established in 2020 by Mr. and Mrs. P. Richard Hackenburg to support the education of students so they may have a successful college career, and be, upon graduation, well equipped to serve their fellow human beings by pursuing endeavors in the scientific, technology, engineering, or mathematics fields. The primary objective of this endowment is to support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math students who demonstrates academic achievement.

Donald C. Haight and Margaret H. Haight Scholarship

This fund was established in 2012 through a bequest from the estate of Margaret H. Haight of Pittsburgh, Pa. Margaret’s husband, Donald C. Haight, was an alumnus from the Class of 1946. Income from the fund will be used annually to award scholarship assistance to one or more deserving students with demonstrated financial need. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Sue Ann Halchin Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1974 in memory of Miss Halchin, a member of the Class of 1976, by her family, school groups and friends. The income is awarded annually to a deserving student, with preference given to graduates of Punxsutawney High School.

John C. Hanley Speech Scholarship

The income from a gift made in 1953 in honor of the Rev. John Cheaney Hanley, D.D., is awarded to the sophomore student who demonstrates excellence in an annual competition for speeches which relate Christian faith to contemporary culture.

Clarence & Mary Ann (Wall) Harms '79 Scholarship for Excellence

The primary objective of this endowment is to support an environmental sciences student who wishes to work at the Westminster Outdoor Laboratory and has demonstrated high academic achievement

Harper Memorial Scholarship

The Harper Memorial Scholarship, established by Percy Harper and Mary Rahiser Harper in 1963 as a memorial to Mrs. Mary Ramsey Harper and her three children, Ruth, Howard and Alan, provides scholarship aid for qualified students. Preference is given to students from Zelienople, Pa.

Mary Rahiser Harper Scholarship

The Mary Rahiser Harper Scholarship, established in 1965 by Percy V. Harper in memory of his wife, Mary Rahiser Harper, provides scholarship aid for students majoring in music.

Stephen G. Hartle Family Scholarship Fund

This Fund was established in 2018 by Stephen G. and Jean M. Hartle to support the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best. The liberal arts tradition is the foundation of the curriculum continually designed to service this mission in a rapidly changing world. The Fund provides permanent support for bright, motivated students, preparing them for a productive, service-filled life while honoring Stephen and Jean M. Hartle for their dedication.

Frank R. Hays Memorial Scholarship

It was established in 1978 by bequest from Mr. Hays, who was the founder of Hays Baking Co. of Oil City, Pa. Mr. Hays was an active Presbyterian layman who believed in supporting church-related higher education.

Hearst Endowed Scholarship for Underserved Rural Students

This fund was established in 1999 by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation of New York. It provides awards to traditional undergraduate students and adult students enrolled in the Lifelong Learning Program with high financial need from rural Pennsylvania counties. Recipients must maintain a B average while making satisfactory progress toward a degree, be good campus citizens, and intend to reside permanently in the United States following the completion of their studies. Awards will be made by the director of financial aid in consultation with the director of adult and graduate studies.

Leah Naugle Heczko '39 Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established by the Estate of Leah Naugle Heczko ’39. Income from the fund shall be awarded annually to provide scholarship assistance to an academically gifted first-year student(s) pursuing a degree in mathematics or science. Selection will be based upon academic merit and demonstrated financial need. The award is renewable each year provided that the recipient(s) remains in good academic standing. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Susan Suomi Herchenroether and Linda Suomi Bethke Scholarship

This fund was established in 2006 by Dr. and Mrs. John D. Suomi of New Wilmington, Pa., to honor their daughters, Susan Suomi Herchenroether, an alumna from the Class of 1977, and Linda Suomi Bethke, an alumna from the Class of 1980. Income from the fund is awarded to a first-year education major who demonstrates academic achievement, good character and some measure of financial need. The recipient is assured of assistance throughout his/her years at Westminster provided that a 3.00 GPA is maintained, and the student remains enrolled as an education major. This award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Warren D. & Lucinda K. Hickman Scholarship

Initiated by Craig A. Dimon '72 and David A. Sarver '73 and in conjunction with alumni, family and friends, this scholarship was established in 2010 in honor and recognition of Dr. Hickman's 40 years (1968-2008) of service to Westminster College. Income from this fund is awarded to a major(s) of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science who has completed at least four courses in their major with a QPA greater than 2.75. Preference is given to an altruistic student. The recipient(s) is to be determined by the chair and members of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science working in cooperation with the director of financial aid.

Hillman, Howard E. and Sonia C. Scholarship

Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to an incoming or established student majoring in education, the sciences, or history from Mercer, Lawrence or Butler counties of Pennsylvania or Mahoning or Trumbull counties of Ohio. Selection will be based upon academic merit and demonstrated financial need. The award is renewable each year provided that the recipient remains in good academic standing. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Robert L. Hite Memorial Scholarship Fund

This fund was established by R. Lee Hite ‘66, chairman of The Hite Company, as a memorial tribute to his father, Robert L. Hite, former chair of the Board of The Hite Company who passed away in 1986. It will provide scholarship assistance for students with demonstrated financial need enrolled in economics, business, or a related field of study, and first preference is given to a student who lives within the service area of The Hite Company.

Patricia Agnew Hodge Music Scholarship

The fund, established in 1998 by Gerald B. Hodge, is in memory of Patricia Agnew Hodge and is awarded as a first preference to a music student from the Greenville, Reynolds, and Jamestown school districts with the highest GPA. Conditions for scholarship renewal require that the recipient maintain a GPA of 3.00 and remain enrolled as a music or music education major. Determination will be made by the director of financial aid.

A. Reed Hoffmaster M.D. Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1995 by gifts from Dr. Hoffmaster's family and friends. Income from the fund is awarded annually to provide aid to academically deserving and financially needy pre-med students during their sophomore or junior year. First preference is given to graduates from Poland High School; if none are eligible, the award may be offered to graduates from Mahoning or Trumbull County. Second preference would be given to students from Lawrence or Mercer County following the same criteria.

Dr. Bryan Hooks and Family Scholastic Achievement Scholarship

With his dream to always "give back", Dr. Bryan Hooks class of 2001, is an orthopedic surgeon and Air Force Officer Veteran. He is forever grateful for the foundation, education, and opportunities his Westminster Bachelor of Science Degree afforded him. Herein, he excelled in academics, leadership, and philanthropy. Following his education at Westminster, he also did a total joint replacement fellowship at the world-renowned, Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Hooks married Angela Hooks (Efler) who earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from Kent State in 2006. Together, they are the proud parents of four beautiful children. The primary objective of this endowment is to provide financial assistance to a promising Westminster College junior or senior, with a minimum grade point average of 3.00, pursuing a Pre-Medical, Health Sciences, Nursing, or Education degree.

Janet E. Hopkins Scholarship

This fund was established in 2009 through a bequest from the estate of Janet E. Hopkins of New Wilmington, Pa. Mrs. Hopkins was a 1943 alumna from Slippery Rock University. In 1965, she received her master’s degree in education from the University of Illinois. She joined the education department of Westminster College and served as a beloved professor in that department until her retirement in 1983. Income from the fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance for an education major with demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. The award will be renewable provided the recipient remains in good academic standing. The award will be made at the discretion of the chair of the Department of Education and the director of financial aid.

Rev. Dr. Joseph M. Hopkins '40 Mission and Ministry Endowed Fund

The Rev. Dr. Joseph Hopkins, Professor Emeritus of Westminster College, lived to the age of 100. Dr. Hopkins graduated from Westminster in 1940 with a Bachelor of Music degree, a Bachelor of Theology degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 1942 and earned his Ph.D. in 1954 from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hopkins taught Bible and Religion at Westminster for 39 years. For Dr. Hopkins, religion was a central focus of his life and work: While teaching at Westminster, he also served as a Presbyterian pastor or supply pastor -- plus devoted time as a missionary to Malawi, Sudan, and Haiti, which is a testimony to his energy and his commitment. He loved "experiential learning," often hosting academic field trips to help students better appreciate the course content (such as visiting different places of worship when studying various religions and cults) and leading academic tours to places like the "Holy Land" to bring authentic context to Biblical learning as the Bible and textbooks come to life! He also had high regard for students venturing forth to mission settings and encouraged them to seize volunteer opportunities where their time, gifts, and skills could help others while sharing the Good News. Additionally, Dr. Hopkins was an accomplished author and continued to compose music through out his life - he ended up producing over 100 musical pieces including three musical productions. Dr. Hopkins was a man whose long life of service was buoyed by beauty, truth, and most of all God's love as found in Christ Jesus as Savior and Lord. The purpose of the Fund is to support the mission and ministry of the Office of Faith and Spirituality on the Westminster College Campus.

Estelle J. Houston Fund

This fund was established in 2005 through a bequest from the estate of Estelle J. Houston of Rochester, N.Y. Miss Houston was an alumna from the Class of 1938. Income from the fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance for deserving students who demonstrate financial need. In keeping with Miss Houston's wishes and her love of Romance languages, first preference will be given to students majoring in French or Spanish with second preference to education majors working toward secondary education teacher certification in French or Spanish. The recipient of this award will be determined by the director of financial aid.

Douglas W. Huemme '63 & Karen L. Schmidt Huemme '64 Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this Fund was established in 2021 by Douglas W. and Karen L. Schmidt Huemme in support of the mission of Westminster College and the opportunities that education and a strong work ethic can provide. The mission of Westminster College is to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best, and the liberal arts tradition is the foundation of the curriculum continually designed to serve this mission in a rapidly changing world.

David W. and Mary C. Hunter Scholarship

The fund was established in 2008 to honor David W. Hunter and his wife, Mary C. Hunter, by their children. Mr. Hunter is a Trustee Emeritus of Westminster College having served with distinction as a member of the Board of Trustees from 1988 through 1998. Income from the fund will provide academic assistance to a deserving first-year student interested in pursuing a career in the field of economics. The recipient will be assured of assistance throughout his or her years at Westminster College provided a 3.20 cumulative GPA is maintained and the student remains enrolled as a business/ economics major. The award is made on the basis of academic achievement and financial need and is awarded at the discretion of the chair of the Department of Economics and Business in cooperation with the director of financial aid.

Irvine/Klussmann Scholarship

This scholarship was originally established in 1975 by Mary Ann Irvine Klussmann ’64 in memory of her father, Dallas S. Irvine. It was later renamed to include her mother, Barbara H. Irvine and was enhanced in 2011 as a memorial to her husband, Frederick J. Klussmann and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Klussmann. Each year income from this fund will provide scholarship assistance to two students with demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. One award will be given to a freshman or transfer music major and an equal award will be given to a freshman or transfer student majoring in business. Award recipients will be determined by the director of financial aid working in cooperation with the chairs of the Department of Music and Department of Economics and Business, respectively.

Dennis Ivill, M.D. & Robert Van Horn, M.S. Scholarship

This fund was established in 2013 by a gift from Dr. Dennis Ivill and Robert Van Horn. Dr. Ivill and Mr. Van Horn received their bachelor of science degrees from Westminster College in 1984. Dr. Ivill continued his education at Temple University School of Medicine where he received his degree in 1988. Mr. Van Horn continued his education at the University of Houston where he received his master of science in 1987. Dr. Ivill and Mr. Van Horn reside in Philadelphia, Pa., where Dr. Ivill practices physical medicine and rehabilitation medicine and Mr. Van Horn directs research in drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics for an international pharmaceutical company. Income from the fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to a deserving first-year student with demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. The award is renewable for an additional three years provided the student remains in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.00. First preference for the award will be made to students majoring in biology, chemistry, or physics. Second preference will be given to students majoring in history or mathematics. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid. A change in major does not affect the renewability of this award provided the student is enrolled as a major in one of the five courses of study listed.

Dr. J.Y. and Mrs. Mary N. Jackson, Iva M. Jackson Scholarship

Established in memory of Dr. J.Y. Jackson and Iva M. Jackson and in honor of Mary N. Jackson in order to provide annual assistance to a student with financial need who intends to enter a church-related vocation and who maintains at least a 3.00 GPA.

James G. James Jr. '79 Memorial Award in Environmental Science

This award was established in 2016 by Mary (Cooley) James '84 M '99, former director of alumni relations at Westminster. Jim was the owner of a successful general contracting and construction consulting business, JEEMCO, based in New Wilmington. Both Jim and Mary shared a love of nature and its sustainability as well as enjoyed the sense of community that Westminster generates among its constituencies. The award shall be used to provide financial assistance to a second-year student majoring in Environmental Science, who was a highly engaged first-year student in undergraduate research, environmental outreach, or other campus and community initiatives. As a second preference, a student who meets the same criteria but majoring in a new or related environmental discipline may receive the award. A committee formed by the Chair of the Division of Biological, Chemical, and Environmental Sciences will recommend a candidate to the Financial Aid Office.

William Ritherford Jamison and Jane Mehaffey Jamison Scholarship

It was established in 1983 by bequest from the estates of Anna Marie and Sylvia G. Jamison, both graduates of Westminster. It aids students who have financial need and who plan to enter careers in the ministry, missionary, educational or medical fields.

Janice G. Jeletic ’80 Scholarship

This award is given to a rising Westminster College sophomore with financial need and may be renewable up to an additional two years, provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA at Westminster College. This Fund was established in 2021 by Janice G. Jeletic, a 1980 graduate with a B.A. in English. She confirmed her calling to a career in communications and marketing as editor-in-chief of the Westminster Argo (student yearbook) for three years. She also was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She dedicates this scholarship to her parents, Frank and Phyllis Jeletic, who loved the College and all that it offers to students and their families.

Charles M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1999 by Mrs. Betty J. Norris ’43 in memory of her brother, Charles M. Johnson ’41. Income from this fund will aid a deserving Jefferson County student with financial need and academic promise with a preference for students studying economics and business, education, or the sciences. Secondary consideration will be shown toward students from Clearfield and Clarion counties, respectively. The scholarship will be renewable provided the student remains in good academic standing and is a good campus citizen. The director of financial aid will select the recipient.

Dr. Graham F. Johnstone '66 & Mrs. Marilyn (Smith) Johnstone Scholarship

Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a rising sophomore student majoring in chemistry who shows academic and professional potential. It is renewable provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA and annually participates in professional development.

Colin and Nathan Kane Memorial Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund, established by the 14th College President, Dr. Richard Dorman, and his wife, Beverly Dorman, and supported through gifts by their friends and colleagues, is in remembrance of Colin and Nathan Kane.

Arthur C. and Elizabeth Kelley Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1983, it helps recipients selected by the Office of Financial Aid.

Eva W. Kelso Scholarship

Income from this fund, established in 1940, is used to assist worthy young men and women. The scholarship was created by a gift from John C. Kelso, Canonsburg, Pa., in memory of his wife.

Leona Klumph Kennedy '52 Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 2002 by a bequest from Leona Klumph Kennedy ’52. The income is to be used for scholarships for deserving, needy students at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Leslie Cox Kennemur Scholarship

This Fund was established in 2021 by Leslie Cox Kennemur '82 in support of the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best. Leslie Cox Pemberton Kennemur is a 1982 graduate of Westminster. Since that time, she has enjoyed a varied and successful career, so feels it is important to give back. The best way to ensure a better future for one or many is to support education. This award is given to a female student with financial need and may be renewable for up to an additional three years, provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA at Westminster College. This scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the Director of Financial Aid. This scholarship will be published annually in the Westminster College. If a change in circumstances should at some future time make it no longer practical or applicable that the Fund be useful for the applied purposes designated herein, in the reasonable judgment of the President of the College, then the President of the College shall have the authority, after consulting first with (i) the living Donor; or if not feasible, second with (ii) the Board of Trustees of the College, to direct the income for purposes deemed to most closely correspond with the intentions of the Donor in fulfillment of the academic mission of Westminster College.

Pat G. Kepple and Thomas R. Kepple, Jr. Endowed Scholarship

This fund was established in 2014 by Pat G. Kepple and Dr. Thomas R. Kepple, Jr. Pat Kepple is from Nashville, Tenn. She is a 1973 magna cum laude graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, with a degree in psychology and business administration. At Juniata, Pat’s responsibilities included manager of the Juniata College Press as well as editor and founder of The Juniata Lantern, a bi-monthly faculty/staff newsletter. She also served as managing editor of Juniata Voices, an annual compilation of lectures and creative works presented by Juniata faculty and by distinguished visitors to campus. Dr. Kepple served as president of Juniata College from 1998 to 2013. He is a 1970 graduate of Westminster College and holds a master of business administration and a doctorate in higher education from Syracuse University. Income from the fund will be used to provide annual scholarship assistance to a first-year student with demonstrated financial need. No other restrictions apply. The award is renewable each year provided that the recipient remains in good academic standing. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

George R. and E. Charmaine Kerr Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2013 by a gift from Charmaine Kerr as a way to provide ongoing support to her beloved Westminster College. George R. Kerr, a Pittsburgh native, enrolled in Westminster immediately upon returning from duty in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII. Shortly thereafter, Charmaine Hazen of Ellwood City, Pa., enrolled at Westminster. The college sweethearts were married shortly after graduation, lived in the Pittsburgh area for many years, and then moved to Tampa, Fla. George (B.A., 1949) was known for his outgoing personality and sense of humor. He went into business, but his main passion was Westminster football and he maintained strong ties to the Department of Athletics until his death in 1997. Charmaine (B.B.A., 1950) was known for her warm, gentle spirit and an appreciation for all things beautiful. Those traits, along with her attention to detail, led her to the avocation of painting porcelain art, which she continued until her death in 2012. Mr. and Mrs. Kerr were enormously proud of their beloved alma mater and remained faithful friends of the College throughout their lives. Income from the fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to a first year student majoring in business. Selection will be based upon academic merit and financial need. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid. This award is renewable for three additional years provided the student remains in good academic standing. A change in major does not affect the renewability of this award.

R. Scott Kirschler Jr. ’88 Memorial Scholarship

This Fund was established in 2021 by R. Scott Kirschler Sr. '63 in memory of his son, R. Scott Kirschler Jr. who graduated in 1988 with a degree in business and was a member of the Westminster golf team.

Susan Price Kirschler '63 Scholarship Fund

This Fund was formalized in 2020 by R. Scott Kirschler Sr. '63 in memory of his wife Susan Price Kirschler, a 1963 mathematics graduate. This scholarship is in support of the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best. Income from the Fund shall be used to provide a need-based scholarship to a student majoring in mathematics or computer science who has a GPA of at least 2.75 following completion of 4 courses in this department.

Dr. Chris A. Knight '76 and Lee W. Knight '07 Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established in 2016 by father and son alumni whom both were recipients of scholarships while attending Westminster. Both were actively involved in extracurricular activities including Sigma Nu Fraternity and sports. Dr. Knight was a three-year letter winner for football and Lee was a four-year winner for swimming. The renewable scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen in good academic standing who have an interest in physical sciences or the field of business. First preference is given to students from Boardman High School or Austintown-Fitch High School; second preference to students who graduated from a district in the greater Mahoning Valley; and third preference, a district in Ohio.

Paul Krakowski Scholarship

This fund was established in 1997 by Paul Krakowski ’45. The income will be awarded with first preference going to a first-year minority student who aspires to a career in written communications and who has an interest in writing for the print media. The award is based on scholarship and financial need with the recipient determined by the director of financial aid working in cooperation with the chair of the Department of Communication Studies and the director of the Office of Diversity Services. If no student can be identified to meet the first preference criteria, the award will be made to a first-year minority student at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Dr. Robert & Susan Krampf Nursing Scholarship Fund

This Fund was established in 2019 by Dr. Robert '64 & Susan Krampf, to assist deserving students as they pursue a career in the field of nursing. Income from this Fund shall be awarded annually, to a student who is enrolled in the nursing program. The candidate will be a well-rounded person, demonstrating high character, integrity, work ethic and strong academic achievement. The scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the Director of Financial Aid to a student, without regard to financial need, who will positively represent the values of Westminster College in the medical field.

June E. Kreiling Memorial Scholarship

This unrestricted fund was established in 1988 by bequest from Florence E. Vincent as a memorial to her daughter, June E. Kreiling.

Emanuel Krueger Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1979 in honor of Mr. Krueger on the Golden Anniversary of his graduation from Westminster by his wife, Mary, and their children, Diane and Keith. Income from the fund is used to aid students with financial need.

Robert D. Lake Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2006 as a memorial to Robert D. Lake by his wife, Lorraine C. Lake, and his family, Lois Lake Ammerman, Dr. Robert S. Lake and Thomas F. Lake. Robert D. Lake was an alumnus from the Class of 1936 and served with distinction as a member of Westminster's Board of Trustees from 1972 through 1979. Income from the fund provides assistance for students from western Pennsylvania or eastern Ohio with demonstrated financial need. First preference will be given to students majoring in mathematics; second preference given to students majoring in the sciences (biology, chemistry, physics). The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Robert E. and Jane S. Lauterbach Academic Scholarship

Established by Robert Lauterbach ’39 and his wife, Jane Stonerod Lauterbach ’41, income from the fund is awarded to an individual at the discretion of the Department of Economics and Business. The selection is based on achievement by the individual and not necessarily financial need.

Lawrence and Mercer County Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2001 from the profit of the annual scholarship benefit “An Evening of Music” by generous area businesses and friends from Lawrence and Mercer counties. The recipient(s) of this scholarship must be a resident(s) of Lawrence or Mercer County, Pa. It is awarded at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Margaret Taylor Lawrence Memorial English Scholarship Fund

The scholarship shall be awarded to rising senior majoring in English with a minimum GPA of 3.50. Preference will be given to a student intending to pursue a career in journalism or publishing industry involving print and/or digital media. Selection of the recipient shall be made by the director of financial aid with the concurrence of the President of Wetminster College. In years in which a scholarship is not awarded, interest from the fund shall be accrued and applied to the subsequent year or years.

Henrietta Lee Fellowships and Scholarships

Income from this fund, established in 1941, is used to provide scholarships for young men and women, which are applied to their senior year expenses. The Henrietta Lee Senior Fellowships are awarded to students with outstanding scholastic records at the end of the junior year. The Henrietta Lee Scholarships are awarded to juniors in recognition of creative achievement and scholastic performance. Both the scholarship and the fellowship winners are announced at the Spring Honors Convocation. Five or more juniors are honored annually with Henrietta Lee awards.

Lemmon Family Scholarship

This fund was established in 2012 through the estates of Helen Louise Lemmon and Margaret Lemmon Janisse. Together, these bequests represent the largest gift received in Westminster’s history. Helen Louise Lemmon entered the College in 1938 and completed two full years of study with a major in secretarial science. Margaret “Peggy” Lemmon Janisse entered with the Class of 1935 and completed three years of study. Pursuant to their defined wishes, the scholarship is intended to honor the life and memory of their parents, George Steele Lemmon and June Saxman Lemmon and their sister, Martha Jane Lemmon. The Lemmon Family believed strongly in the importance of higher education. They lived with a genuine appreciation for hard work and an understanding of philanthropic responsibility. Income from the fund will be used to provide assistance for first-year students enrolled in the College’s pre-health profession curriculum with first preference given to pre-med majors. The award is renewable provided the recipients follow and demonstrate ongoing progress in the required pre-health profession program. The Medical Professions Advisory Committee will formally review students yearly to assess progress and ongoing eligibility for the Lemmon Family Scholarship. Recipients will be selected by the vice president for admissions and financial aid and the director of financial aid with advisement from the Medical Professions Advisory Committee.

Norman and Clara Levy Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1987 by bequest from Mrs. Levy. Income is used to further the Christian education of young students who without such aid would be unable to complete their education.

Ligo French Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 1991 in memory of Ida Louise Ligo ’15 and Alice E. Ligo ’25 by bequest of Alice E. Ligo, former French professor at Westminster. The income provides scholarships to be awarded on the basis of merit to students majoring in French with specific provisions to be at the discretion of the French faculty of the College but with the understanding that the recipients would be able, where appropriate, to use their scholarships when enrolled in approved off-campus programs.

Ligo Scholarship

This endowed fund established in 1981 as a memorial to Ida L. Ligo ’15, is the first endowed fund designated for use in the Alumni Grant-in-Aid Scholarship Program.

Lisa A. Soler Lizanich Marketing Scholarship

Lisa Soler Lizanich graduated from Westminster in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. She established this scholarship in 2023 to recognize and reward a high-performing student in marketing. She is thankful for the marketing degree she received from Westminster and the foundation it provided her for a successful business career in marketing and sales. The primary objective of this endowment is to retain Westminster College students who are majoring in mrketing and who have the ability, but not the financial resources to attend college.

Matthew P. Lizanich Accounting Scholarship

Matthew P. Lizanich, who graduated from Westminster College in 1993 with a degree in accounting, established this scholarship in 2023 to recognize and reward a high-performing student in accounting. Matt is thankful for the accounting degree he received from Westminster and how that enabled him to have a successful career at Ernst and Young LLP where he obtained the level of partner. His wish is that this scholarship will enable other students to achieve success in their accounting careers. The primary objective of this endowment is to retain Westminster College students who are majoring in accounting and who have the ability, but not the financial resources to attend college.

Matthew and Lisa Soler Lizanich Business Scholarship

In appreciation for the opportunities provided by a Westminster College education, Matthew and Lisa Soler Lizanich established this scholarship in 2023. Lisa Soler Lizanich graduated from Westminster in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. She is thankful for the marketing degree she received from Westminster and the foundation it provided her for a successful business career in marketing and sales. Matthew Lizanich graduated in 1993 with a degree in accounting. He is thankful for the accounting degree he received from Westminster and how that enabled him to have a successful career at Ernst and Young LLP where he obtained the level of partner. Their wish is that this scholarship will enable other students to achieve success in their business careers. This scholarship will be awarded to a student with high academic achievement, majoring in the field of business.

Laura Russell Loomis ’53 and Jane Loomis Smith ’80 Endowed Sscholarship

The primary objective of this endowed scholarship is to provide financial support to a first-year student, with financial need, who is considering or pursuing a degree in education, the sciences, or history at Westminster College. Established in 2022, this fund gratefully acknowledges the friendships, education, and spiritual development Westminster College offered Laura Russell Loomis '53 and Jane Loomis Smith '80. This fund also honors the spirit and perseverance of the students, faculty, and staff during the Pandemic of 2020-2022. Description confirmed on May 8, 2023.

Hazel S. Love Endowment

This fund was created through a gift in the estate of Louetta H. Love in memory of her mother-in-law, Hazel S. Love. Income from this fund is awarded to a deserving student or students who have need for financial assistance to attend Westminster College.

Susan Anderson Lydon '68 Endowed Scholarship

This Fund was formalized in 2021 by Patrick J. Lydon '70 in memory of his wife, Susan Anderson Lydon '68 and in support of the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best. Susan lived life to the fullest, devoted to her family, friends, and the experiences they shared together. She was a compassionate wife, raised two children as a working mom, and absolutely adored her two grandchildren. She was a strong, principled, conservative women who exemplified a strong work ethic and encouraged independence. She enjoyed golf, travel, and her beloved Iowa Hawkeyes and Pittsburgh Steelers. Susan was born andraised in Greensburg, PA and a 1964 graduate of Hempfield High. She was a 1968 graduate of Westminster College in elementary education and was a substitute teacher until her children were in nursery school then pursued her passion for nursing, earning her BSN from the University of Iowa in 1978. The first half of her career was in neurology at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, IA. The second half was as a visiting nurse in metro Detroit providing in home assessment, treatment, education, and general TLC. This award is given to a declared nursing student with financial need, following their first year, and may be renewable for up to an additional three years, provided the student maintains a 3.0 GPA at Westminster College.

Ronald B. and Emiliy P. Mackall Scholarship

This fund was established in 2007 through a bequest from Emily Parker Mackall, an alumna of the Class of 1934. The fund represents a memorial tribute to Mrs. Mackall and her husband, Ronald B. Mackall. Mrs. Mackall distinguished herself through her lifelong dedication to higher education, reflected in both her professional life and her service to the field. A New Castle native, she was graduated with honors from Westminster College in 1934 with a dual degree in mathematics and economics and earned an MBA from Northwestern University where she was one of the first women admitted to graduate studies in the prestigious Kellogg School of Business Administration. Mrs. Mackall served as a member of the Westminster College Board of Trustees from 1994-2002. Income from the fund is awarded at the discretion of the director of financial aid. Scholarship recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 and be good citizens of the campus and larger community. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

Dr. Peter W. Macky Memorial Service Award

This scholarship award will honor a third-year student who exhibits Christ-like service to the campus and the larger community, and whose example of dedication and caring for others inspires other students and exemplifies the best qualities of the human spirit. This award is not intended as a "most active" service award based on a listing of activities. The depth and impact of service are the main criteria. Only third-year students are eligible for the award, and payment/use will be applied to the fourth year of study at Westminster College. There are no restrictions as to declared major, GPA, or financial need. The award will be presented at the annual Spring Honors Convocation. Students must be nominated in writing by a faculty member, and the recipient will be selected by the admissions and financial aid committee. Members of the Macky family will be informed of the nominees and their qualifications and, within one week of notification, may submit comments to the director of financial aid for consideration.

Dr. Peter W. Macky Memorial Soccer Award

This non-cash award will honor a third-year or fourth-year member of the Westminster men’s soccer team who enhances morale by exhibiting to the team Christ-like service as determined by the coach, soccer team members, and other designated judges. This award is not intended as a “most valuable player” skill award. Rather, it is intended to recognize the individual whose example of dedication and caring for others on the team and in the community inspires the best in the players.

Deborah (Platt) Majoras '85 and John M. Majoras Scholarship

Formally established in 2016, the need-based scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who graduated from high school in good academic standing and demonstrated extracurricular and/or community engagement. Preference will be given to students from Meadville Area High School in Meadville, Pa.; second preference, Crawford County, Pa.; and third preference, northwestern Pa. The scholarship is renewable provided the student remains in good academic standing.

The Dr. Harry S. Manley and Carolyn H. Manley Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2012 by Carolyn Hamilton Manley to honor the life and work of her husband, Dr. Harry S. Manley, and in gratitude for the education both received at Westminster. Dr. Manley graduated in 1942 and taught from 1945-1952. Mrs. Manley attended from 1945-1948. This scholarship will provide assistance to students majoring in political science with ability, character and demonstrated financial need. This scholarship is renewable provided the recipient remains enrolled as a political science major and is in good academic standing.

Thomas V. and Margaret Mansell Scholarship

This fund was established in 1979 in honor of the Mansells on the Golden Anniversary of their graduation by their four children, all graduates of Westminster, Mary Lou '58, Thomas S. '61, Elizabeth '63, and Charles Y. '68. Mr. Mansell is the former vice chairman of Westminster's Board of Trustees.

Laura Marquis Scholarship

Income from this fund, established in 1939, is available to graduates of New Castle High School.

Clarence J. Martin Scholarship

This fund was established in 2013 by the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Clarence J. Martin, Professor of Music Emeritus. Dr. Martin received his B.Mus., from Houghton College; M. Mus., from Indiana University; and D.M.A., from the University of Cincinnati. The fund honors Dr. Martin’s devotion to music education and choral direction and recognizes his 41 years of service to the students and faculty within the Department of Music at Westminster College and to the greater Westminster College community. Income from this fund is awarded annually to provide scholarship assistance to a deserving first-year music major with demonstrated financial need. This award is renewable provided the students remains in good academic standing and enrolled as a music major. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid working in consultation with the chair of the Department of Music.

Will R. Maurer II '53 and Carol Jean (Young) Maurer '62 Scholarship

This Fund was established in 2017 by Will and Carol Maurer in support of the mission of Westminster College. Income from the fund will provide scholarship assistance to an incoming freshman who graduated from high school in good academic standing with financial need. First preference is to an incoming freshman from Belle Vernon Area High School, second preference shall be to an incoming freshman from Elizabeth Forward High School.

John F. McBurney Bible Award

This endowed fund was established in 1987 by a bequest from the estate of M. Elizabeth McBurney in memory of her husband. The award is for outstanding scholarship in the area of religion or philosophy to a deserving student in accordance with the College scholarship policy.

Dr. J. Bardarah McCandless Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1998. Professor McCandless faithfully served Westminster College from 1961-1994 as a member of the Department of Religion. This fund honors Dr. McCandless for her dedication and devotion to Westminster and provides scholarship aid for deserving students who demonstrate financial need. The recipient will be determined by the director of financial aid.

Bill & Ruth McCauley Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the family and friends of Bill and Ruth McCauley in 1998. The income from this fund shall be used to provide financial assistance to upper-class students who are pursuing careers in any area of teacher education or to graduate students pursuing careers through the Counselor Education Program. Students should show financial need and the recipients will be selected by the chair of the Department of Education and the director of financial aid.

McCauley Aid Fund

This aid fund was established by a bequest in 1963 from the estate of Thomas McCauley of Philadelphia, Pa. The income is used for the assistance of worthy and needy students intending to enter the ministry or other Christian service.

Dr. W. Donald McClure Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1977 by members of the Newlonsburg United Presbyterian Church, Murrysville, Pa., where Dr. McClure ’28 was pastor before beginning a 40-year career in the mission field in Ethiopia and the Sudan. The fund includes gifts from members of the church, Westminster alumni, and other friends. Income from the fund provides aid for students with need who are preparing for the pulpit ministry, either at home or in the mission field abroad.

Frank L. and Esther Van Dyke McClure Music Scholarship

This fund was established in 2002 by a bequest of Kenneth W. and Kathryn McClure Beels ’33 in memory of Kathryn’s parents, Frank L. and Esther Van Dyke McClure. The income from the trust is awarded annually to music students on the basis of merit and academic achievement. The award is to be made at the discretion of the chair of the Department of Music and the director of financial aid.

Judson C. McConnell Scholarship

This fund was established in 2006 by the Chapel Program Reunion Committee and presented to the Rev. Dr. Judson C. McConnell at Westminster's homecoming and reunion celebration on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006. Gifts were received to honor Rev. McConnell and his outstanding service to Westminster College and her students. Rev. McConnell served as dean of the chapel and associate professor in the religion and philosophy department from 1959-1981 and as alumni director from 1981-1985. Income from this fund will be used to make an award in Rev. McConnell's name at the annual Spring Honors Convocation to a rising fourth-year student with a recommended GPA of 3.00 and demonstrated financial need. The award will be presented to a student who mirrors Rev. McConnell's devotion to service and who has demonstrated that commitment to the campus community through participation in the Chapel Program and/or other campus or community service opportunities. This award is not exclusive to a student preparing for the ordained ministry or a church-related vocation, but rather it is intended as recognition for a student who understands that educational goals in any discipline can be a means to religious service to others. The recipient will be selected by the College chaplain in consultation with the director of financial aid.

Wallace E. McConnell Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1999 through a bequest of Dorothy H. McConnell in memory of her husband, Wallace E. McConnell ’22. Income from the fund is used to assist students in the Chemistry Department. The recipient will be determined by the director of financial aid.

The Dr. Margaret Engle McCullough Scholarship

This fund was established in 2012 by Allen D. McCullough, an alumnus from the Class of 1950, to honor his wife, Dr. Margaret “Peg” Engle McCullough and her dedicated career as an educator and school administrator. Dr. McCullough entered Westminster College with the Class of 1953, but left after a year and a half. She eventually received her bachelor of arts degree from Kent State University, her master of arts degree from John Carroll University, and her Ph.D. from Kent State University. Dr. McCullough is an enthusiastic lifelong learner and has a genuine appreciation for the challenges faced by non-traditional students returning to College to pursue degrees. Income from the fund is awarded as scholarship assistance to a student with demonstrated financial need. First preference is given to a non-traditional student pursuing an undergraduate degree in education. Second preference is given to a traditional student pursuing a degree in education. The award will be renewable provided the recipient remains in good academic standing and enrolled as an education major. The award will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Robert T. and Virginia R. McDaniel Endowed Athletic Assistant

This fund was established in 1991 by Robert McDaniel ’49 and his wife, Virginia Rupp McDaniel ’49. The income is to be awarded annually first to needy education majors pursuing a career in special education, then to needy minority students majoring in elementary education, or finally, to needy students majoring in elementary education.

Lyn E. McFarland '77 Endowed Scholarship

This fund was created in 2020 by the estate of Mrs. Margaret E. McFarland '50 to honor the life and legacy of her daughter, Lyn E. McFarland '77. Marg and Lyn were graduates of Westminster College; Marg in 1950 with a degree in business administration and Lyn in 1977 with a degree in history. Both found the principles, values and ideals instilled in them at Westminster to be important in their lives. Friends and family in the local community were also very important. Lyn found great enjoyment and adventure in reading as it provided an opportunity for not only information, but also understanding of the world around us. The purpose of the Lyn E. McFarland '77 scholarship is to honor the life of Lyn McFarland and is to be awarded at the discretion of the director of financial aid. This scholarship is to promote the pursuit of higher education, through Westminster College's mission and liberal arts tradition. Income from this fund will provide scholarship assistance to four Westminster College students annually, who are in good academic standing and in need of financial assistance to attend Westminster College.

Anne McAuley McGill Memorial Endowment

This fund was established in 1996 by the family of Anne McAuley McGill ’37. Mrs. McGill devoted her life to missionary work in Egypt with her husband, the Rev. Willis A. McGill ’33. Income from the fund’s investments is to be used solely for the preservation, enhancement, and use of the College’s collection of cultural artifacts for educational purposes.

Harry W. McKean '82 Scholarship

The income from a bequest in 1963 from the estate of Harry W. McKean, Kansas City, KS, provides scholarship aid for deserving students.

Delber L. McKee Scholarship for Excellence in History/International Relations

This fund was established in 2018 by the family of Delber L. McKee. Dr. McKee joined the history department of Westminster College in 1952. He became chairman of the Department of History, Political Science and Sociology in 1956 and continued in that capacity until 1979. He was acting dean of the College in 1977. He retired from Westminster College in 1989, but continued to be engaged with Westminster, specifically through his work in an emeritus capacity as curator of the cultural artifacts collection between 1991 and 2000. The inclusion of "International Relations" in the scholarship title is a reflection of the fact that his Ph.D. dissertation was on Asian/American relations during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and he maintained this interest through the remainder of his academic career. This scholarship will provide assistance to students who have declared an interest in history and/or international relations and have demonstrated high academic achievement.

Kevin M. McManus Excellence in Jazz Award and Scholarship

This fund was established in 2014 by an anonymous donor and friend of Westminster College. The fund was created to honor Kevin M. McManus, director of the Westminster College Jazz Ensemble, to recognize his stellar efforts in the direction of the Jazz Ensemble and to assist in elevating the level of the Jazz Ensemble's performance through recruiting and retaining talented students. Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to established or incoming students with demonstrated talent for participation in the Jazz Ensemble. Recipients do not need to be declared music majors or minors to qualify; however, recipients must be enrolled in the Jazz Ensemble for the Fall and Spring semesters unless an exception is made by the director of the Jazz Ensemble. Selection is made by the chair of the Music Department in consultation with Kevin M. McManus and the director of financial aid.

Pearl G. McNall, M.D. Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2012 by action of the Board of Trustees to honor the life of Dr. Pearl G. McNall. Dr. McNall received her bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Westminster College in 1943. She worked as a research associate at the Mellon Institute before earning a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She was board-certified in anesthesiology in 1952. She was the first woman on the senior medical staff at Mercy Hospital and served as chair of the Medical Advisory Board for the Myasthenia Gravis Association of Western Pennsylvania. In 1977, Westminster College conferred an honorary degree upon Dr. McNall for her many professional accomplishments in the research and medical fields and for her devotion to the College. Income from the fund is awarded to a student with demonstrated financial need. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

McQuiston College Service Award

These awards, endowed by W. James McQuiston ’29 and Mrs. McQuiston of Battle Creek, MI, in 1979, are given annually at the Spring Honors Convocation to a rising senior man and a rising senior woman for unselfish service to the Westminster community during their college careers. Selection is made by the faculty and administrative members of the student life committee from nominations made by classmates. The awards are in honor and in memory of seven members of the McQuiston family with Westminster ties. They are the Rev. J.A.C. McQuiston, College trustee, 1913-17, and first business manager, 1917-20; Mrs. J.A.C. McQuiston, acting dean of Hillside Dormitory, 1917-18; Daniel H. McQuiston ’15, director of athletics, 1922-23; Helene McQuiston (Mrs. D.H.), music faculty, 1922-24; Charles M. McQuiston ’16; Minnie Belle McQuiston Ege ’18, dean of women, 1921-22; and Mary E. McQuiston ’69.

Dr. William J. McTaggart Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established by friends and family in 2006 in memory of Dr. William J. McTaggart who taught in the Department of English at Westminster from 1975-2001. Bill had a profound influence on the College students and colleagues throughout his 26-year career. Income from this fund will be awarded for the junior year to an outstanding student who is majoring in English with a secondary education minor. The selection will be made by the English Department.

Roger & Helen Metzler Scholarship

The primary objective of this endowment is to provide merit-based support to a Westminster student(s), who is concentrating in the fields of physics, engineering physics or chemistry. This Fund was formalized in 2022 by Roger and Helen Metzler in support of Westminster students and in recognition of academic achievement and the ongoing need to minimize student's college debt upon graduation. This scholarship is in support of the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best. Dr. Beverly K. Michael '69 Math Education Award

This fund was established in 2017 by Dr. Beverly K. Michael '69. Dr. Michael graduated with a B.S. in mathematics. She received her M.Ed. and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. She has devoted her career to teaching mathematics and training and supervising teachers. Dr. Michael has taught at the Pittsburgh Public Schools, Penn State University New Kensington campus, and the University of Pittsburgh where she was a professor and the mathematics teaching specialist for 33 years. She has been recognized as a leader in using technology to teach mathematics at the college level and is co-author of Explorations in College Algebra, now in its 6th edition. Income from this fund shall be used to provide a monetary award to a mathematics major who intends to pursue a career as a high school math teacher and shows exemplary mathematics and teaching skills. The student must have a minimum 3.0 math GPA and demonstrate an interest in teaching by having contact with students in a role such as a math tutor, teaching assistant, volunteer in school, camp counselor or math mentor.

Margaret Williams Migliore Memorial Scholarship in Education

The Margaret Williams Migliore Memorial Scholarship in Education Fund is established by Daniel L. Migliore, in honor of his wife, Margaret Williams Migliore, who graduated from Westminster College in 1956 with a degree in business education. During her time at Westminster, Margaret was an honors student and a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta, the band, and the choir. Margaret went on to have a distinguished teaching career in public high schools, where she is remembered as having always welcomed and encouraged all students regardless of background. This scholarship will be awarded to one rising senior, annually as they prepare for a career in the teaching profession.

Lois Studt Miller Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established in 2009 by James H. Miller to honor his wife, Lois Studt Miller, for her outstanding scholastic achievements during her years at Westminster College and her lifelong passion for learning, knowledge, and the value of education. The scholarship will benefit a rising second-year student with an English or literature major who mirrors Mrs. Miller's pursuit of academic excellence. Recipients must have achieved a 3.50 GPA in their major coursework and a cumulative GPA of 3.30 in all college work. This award is renewable throughout the student's years at Westminster provided that he/she remains enrolled as either an English or literature major, satisfies the original GPA requirements, and remains a responsible member of the campus and larger communities. This award is merit-based and intended to reward academic achievement. No geographic, financial need, or gender restrictions are applicable. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Wayne A. Miller, MD '61 and Rhudell (Forrest) Miller '62 Health Professions Scholarship

Students who are pursuing a career in the health sciences are eligible for this endowed scholarship which was formalized in 2016 by Dr. and Mrs. Miller. This renewable, need-based scholarship will be awarded to students with a GPA of 3.0 or better who remain in health sciences and are in good academic standing.

Samuel S. Moore '60 and Beatrice (Koenig) Moore '60 Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2016 by Samuel S. and Beatrice (Koenig) Moore, Class of 1960. Income from the fund shall be used to provide a merit-based scholarship to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher who are pursuing a degree in education, business, pre-med or the medical field without regard to financial need. Special consideration will be given to students with conservative views who are active members of a Christian church.

William P. Moorehead and Carol Moorehead Scholarship

Originally established in 1993, this award was renamed in 1998 in memory of both William P. Moorhead, longtime friend of Westminster College, and his sister Carol Moorhead. Income from this fund is available to students with financial need from Graystone Church. If none are eligible, the awards may be offered to other qualified students with financial need from Indiana, Pa.

Allie Morrison and John McGrath Scholarship

The fund was established in 2007 through a bequest from the estate of Suzanne McGrath Dale and a gift from Roger J. Dale, personal representative for the estate. Suzanne McGrath Dale received her bachelor of arts degree from Westminster College in 1964 as an English major. Ms. Dale went on to receive her Juris Doctorate degree from Dickinson School of Law. Income from The Allie Morrison and John McGrath Scholarship Fund will be awarded annually with first preference given to a fourth-year female student majoring in English. The award will be made to the student who best demonstrates outstanding scholarship skills and academic development. The award will not be based solely on GPA; financial need is not a consideration in the selection process. The recipient will be identified by the chair of the Department of English working in cooperation with the director of financial aid. If the chair of the Department of English is unable to identify a student to receive The Allie Morrison and John McGrath Scholarship Award, second preference is given to any fourth-year female student who has distinguished herself through scholarship and academic achievement in her major field of study. That recipient will be identified by the director of financial aid working in cooperation with other department chairs.

Margaret Stevenson Mountsier Scholarship

Income from this fund, established in 1987, is to be used for general scholarships with preference given to students who are graduates of Nutley (N.J.) High School.

Dale L. Mullen Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1993 by Mary L. Mullen in memory of Dale L. Mullen. The income from this fund will be used to reduce the student loan component of the financial aid offer of a student from Lawrence County. The recipient will be chosen by the director of financial aid.

Leonard Myers Scholarship

This fund was created by a bequest in 1974 from the estate of Leonard Myers of Farrell, Pa., to provide assistance to a black student at Westminster.

Maude Myers Trust Scholarship

This endowed fund was established in 1995 by a bequest from the Maude Myers Trust. The income is used annually for students with academic achievements and extracurricular activities. Recipients will be selected by the enrollment management committee of the Board of Trustees.

Chalmers E. and M. Jeane Myers/Zech Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2007 by Chalmers E. Zech as a memorial tribute to his wife, M. Jeane Myers/Zech. To honor Jeane's beautiful voice and her love of music, income from the fund will be awarded to a female student majoring in music (vocal) performance or music education. First preference to be given to students from Lawrence and Mercer counties, Pa. Conditions for scholarship renewal requires that the recipient maintain a GPA of 3.00 and remain enrolled as a music or music education major. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid. The fund was renamed in 2008 in loving memory of both Mr. and Mrs. Zech by their daughters, Barbara J. Zech, Anne Zech Luecke and Martha Zech MacKay. Mr. and Mrs. Zech were members of the Class of 1947, and they were married in Wallace Memorial Chapel on June 5, 1948.

Robert F. & Geraldine R. Navarra Scholarship

Roberta “Bobbi” Navarra ’78 established this scholarship in memory and honor of her parents, Robert F. Navarra M’67 and Geraldine Retort Navarra. Robert F. Navarra was born in Hillsville, Pennsylvania, on July 26, 1925. He was a veteran and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 and the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1951. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he obtained a master’s from Westminster College in 1967. After four years as a civil service employee, Mr. Navarra began working for the New Castle Area School District in 1955 as a teacher, coach and counselor. He later became an administrator, serving as assistant principal until his retirement in 1986. Geraldine Retort Navarra was born in Hillsville on Sept. 27, 1932. She was a standout student at Bessemer High School and began her career immediately upon graduation. She began working as a receptionist at the Lawrence County Board of Assistance and quickly moved up the ranks, serving as personnel director until her retirement in 1985 after 35 years of continuous service. It was the Navarras’ wish that their only child, Bobbi, attend Westminster College. This scholarship was established by Bobbi to honor her parents and the role Westminster has played in her life.

Dr. Thomas R. Nealeigh Mathematics Scholarship

This fund was established on Dec. 18, 1999, in honor and recognition of Dr. Thomas R. Nealeigh's 23 years of service to Westminster College in the Department of Mathematics on the date of his 50th wedding anniversary by his family, friends, and colleagues. The student recipient(s) should be a mathematics major in their junior and/or senior year of studies. The recipient(s) is to be determined by the chair of the Department of Mathematics.

The Carol Polandick Neely '61 Music Award for Excellence

This fund was established in 2016 by William C. Neely '62 to support students who have the potential to do exceptional things in and for our society, irrespective of the extent to which the student may need financial aid. A committee formed by the Chair of the School of Music will choose a candidate who has demonstrated outstanding academic, leadership and muscial skills and who is committed to teaching music at any level in the public schools.

The William C. Neely '62 Free Market Business Award for Excellence

This fund was established in 2016 by William C. Neely '62 to support students who have the potential to do exceptional things in and for our society, irrespective of the extent to which the student may need financial aid. A committee formed by the Chair of the School of Business will choose a candidate who has demonstrated outstanding academic and leadership skills, who is actively committed to the principles of a free-market economy and whose functional interests tend toward marketing and/or general management.

Christie and Ben Nelson Prize for Networking Success Fund

This Fund was established in 2018 by Dr. Christie L. (Grewe) Nelson '06 and Mr. Benjamin T. Nelson '06. Dr. Christie L. (Grewe) Nelson graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. Mr. Benjamin T. Nelson also graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in History. Co-founders of the Professional Network Symposium along with Professor Dan Fischmar, Christie and Ben are passionate advocates for the power of networking. The Fund will reward students that effectively utilize the Symposium and the great networking and career advancement opportunities it provides.

David R, Nesbit ’79 and Mary Jo Nesbit Accounting and Finance

David graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Business Administration/Accounting in 1979, and was a member of the cross-country team and the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity while attending Westminster. Upon graduation, David began a 40-year career in the accounting and finance industry. After working approximately five years at an international public accounting firm and obtaining his certified public accounting (CPA) licensure, David worked for 35 years at the Bank of New York Mellon (BNYM) in various accounting, finance and corporate strategy positions, and he also obtained an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business in 1986. At the time of his retirement from BNY mid July 2018, David was Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Finance. This award is given to one outstanding school of business accounting or finance major who has completed at least 12 semester hours in accounting and intends to enter an accounting or finance profession.

John Henry Newman Award

This fund was established in 2017 by Dr. Beverly K. Michael '69 and shall be used to provide a monetary award to a rising junior or senior who is a member of the Newman Club and has shown the ability to live his/her life with faith and reason. Dr. Michael graduated with a B.S. in mathematics. She received her M.Ed. and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Coach Gene Nicholson Leadership and Service Award

This honors a student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the campus and off-campus communities throughout his/her Westminster career with a $1,000 scholarship award. Special consideration will be given for volunteer work with youth. The award will be made to a student in his/her junior year without regard to financial need. The recipient must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the end of their sophomore year. Nominations for the award may be made by any Westminster faculty member, administrator, and staff member, and the recipient will be selected by the College's enrollment management council. The award will be presented at the annual Spring Honors Convocation. The award was established to honor Coach Gene Nicholson and the values he exemplified upon his 2007 retirement by a group of alumni swim team members and friends.

Coach Gene Nicholson Swimmer/Scholar Recognition Award (Non-Cash)

This non-cash award program will honor excellence in academics by swim team members. Students will be eligible for these honorary recognition awards in their junior and senior years. Qualifying criteria include membership in the swim team, full-time enrollment at Westminster College, and attaining a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better at the end of the first semesters of the junior and/or senior years (students who have been placed on academic/disciplinary probation in their junior and/or senior years are not eligible to receive the award). Awards will be presented at the annual Swim Team banquet. Recipients will receive an appropriate commemorative item (such as a plaque, framed certificate, etc.). The award was established to honor Coach Gene Nicholson — and the values he exemplified — upon his 2007 retirement by a group of alumni swim team members and friends.

Elizabeth Nixon Memorial Scholarship

The Elizabeth Nixon Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Elizabeth Nixon, associate professor of journalism at Westminster from 1946 until her death in 1956. From a fund established in 1961 by her students, alumni, and colleagues and other friends, this annual scholarship aid is awarded at the Spring Honors Convocation to junior public relations students who demonstrate exceptional promise in public relations and journalism, based on scholarship and need.

Gordy Opitz ’79 and Linda Opitz Endowed Scholarship

This Fund was established in 2022 by Gordy and Linda Opitz. Gordy Opitz '79 graduated with a Degree in Education and played basketball and baseball earning 7 varsity letters. After teaching and coaching for 3 years, he started his business career with Comdoc, Inc (office technology). Throughout his 38-year career, he held several leadership positions and was the CEO & President from 2007-2021 when he retired. Description confirmed on May 8, 2023.

John Orr Scholarship

In 1972 to honor Dr. John Orr, Professor Emeritus of Religion, a group of alumni enlarged the fund he established in 1962 as the Karux Bible Award. Annually, the interest from this new fund is awarded to a seminary-bound pre-ministerial student who has done outstanding academic work in a minimum of four courses in the field of religion. The scholarship, determined on the basis of three and one-half years’ record, is announced by the chair of the Department of Religion, History, Philosophy and Classics.

Will W. and Eloise Orr Scholarship

This fund was established to honor the memory and the ministry of Dr. Will W. Orr, the ninth president of Westminster College (1949-67), and his wife, Eloise Reid Orr '66. Dr. and Mrs. Orr cared deeply for the Presbyterian Church and saw Westminster as a place where the leadership of the church could be nurtured and strengthened. This scholarship grants aid to incoming students who have demonstrated leadership in their local Christian congregation and who have the potential to be leaders of the church. Awards are based on application (available in the Office of Financial Aid) and recommendations from the student's pastor or youth minister. The award may be renewed for the second, third and fourth years at the discretion of the Chaplain's Office based upon the recipient's character, participation in Christian events, bible study, chapel programming, and volunteer service to others.

Winifred Orr Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1966 in memory of Winifred E. Orr, a Westminster graduate of 1905, by her sister Ethel M. Orr, of the Class of 1908, and her brother, Samuel H. Orr.

Barbara Ostrowski Scholarship

This fund was established in 1986 through gifts from family and friends in memory of Mrs. Ostrowski, who was a member of the College secretarial staff for six years before her death in 1986. Income from this fund will be awarded annually to a peace studies minor or another student who has completed at least 80 semester hours, has at least a 3.00 overall GPA, and demonstrates active civic involvement through service, conflict resolution work, or other activities that benefit the greater community. To be considered for this award, applicants must complete the scholarship application available from the peace studies coordinator.

Theodore T. Ostrowski Memorial Scholarship

Family and friends established this fund in 2003 in memory of Theodore T. Ostrowski '84. Service to church and community was a central theme of Ted's life. This fund aids students in the Lifelong Learning Program who have demonstrated involvement with church and/or community service. Ted was one of the first undergraduates to receive a baccalaureate degree through the Westminster College Lifelong Learning Program. The recipient will be recommended each year by the director of adult and graduate studies.

Doris Piccino Overboe Scholarship

This fund was established in 2010 by Ellerth Overboe to honor his wife, Doris Piccino Overboe, an alumna from the Class of 1956. Mrs. Overboe received her bachelor of arts degree from Westminster College with a major in history and went on to complete her education with a master of arts degree at Northwestern University in Chicago. Income from the fund is awarded annually to a first-year student with demonstrated financial need. First preference is given to a history major; second preference is given to a student majoring in either political science or sociology. The award is renewable each year provided that the recipient remains in good academic standing. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Betty J. Parisen Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2010 through a bequest from the estate of Berry J. Parisen, an alumna from the Class of 1945. Mrs. Parisen was graduated with a bachelor of business administration from Westminster College and continued her education at the University of Pittsburgh where she received her master of education. She was a lifelong educator, a member of several community orchestras in the Pittsburgh area, and traveled extensively. Income from the fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to students with demonstrated financial need and academic merit. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Merle A. Parkes Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2008 by Jonathan Parkes Bigley in honor and memory of his grandfather, Merle Arthur Parkes, (1914-1970), a lifelong resident of New Castle, Pa. While not formally educated himself, Mr. Parkes' love of learning and interest in encouraging people to achieve higher educational and vocational goals was clearly perceived by all who knew and loved him. Income from the fund will be awarded to an incoming first-year student with a high school GPA of 3.00 or a transfer student with a GPA of 3.00 from the following western Pennsylvania counties: Greene, Fayette, Somerset, Bedford, Washington, Allegheny, Westmoreland, Cambria, Blair, Beaver, Armstrong, Indiana, Lawrence, Butler, Jefferson, Mercer, Venango, Forest, Crawford, Warren, and Erie. The recipient will meet the financial need criteria established by Westminster College and be assured of assistance throughout his/her years at Westminster provided the student maintains the GPA of 3.00. Funds may be used for the following college-related expenses: tuition, fees, books, food and housing. Awards will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Dr. James Patterson Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1985 by Ruth Thomas Carson, his great-grandniece, and honors Dr. Patterson, who served as Westminster’s first president from 1853-66. It also honors Grace Elizabeth Thomas and Dr. Ralph L. Thomas, both deceased.

Virginia Reehl Patton Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2009 through a bequest from the estate of Virginia Reehl Patton of Pittsburgh, Pa. Mrs. Patton received her Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Westminster in 1952 and her master's degree in special education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974. Mrs. Patton, affectionately known as Ginnie, was a devoted mother and a lifelong educator who brought her deep faith in all that she accomplished. Mrs. Patton was the wife of Robert F. Patton '50 who served as chair of Westminster's Board of Trustees from 1987-1991. Income from the fund is awarded annually as scholarship assistance for an education major with demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. The award will be renewable provided the recipient remains in good academic standing. The award will be made at the discretion of the chair of the Department of Education and the director of financial aid.

J. Miller Peck Scholarship

This fund was established in 2001 in honor and recognition of Miller Peck’s 40 years of service to Westminster College in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The student recipient(s) should be a computer science major in his/her junior/senior year of studies. The recipient(s) is to be determined by the chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Anthony "Tony" L. Perrotta Sr. Endowed Scholarship

This Fund was established in 2022 by Louis M. Perrotta '94 and Kristi M. Perrotta '97 in memory of his father, Anthony Tony L. Perrotta.

Philip G. and Virginia G. Petraglia Scholarship

This fund was established in 2011 by Philip G. Petraglia ’83 and Virginia G. Petraglia. Income from the fund is awarded to an incoming first-year student (or students) living outside a 200-mile radius of the College. The award is intended to assist students with ability, character, and financial need. The recipient will have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in extracurricular and service activities during the high school years. The recipient will be assured of assistance throughout his/her time at Westminster provided he/she maintains an overall GPA of 2.75 and remains a good citizen of the campus community. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Francis X. Petrini Sr. and Carole R. Petrini Scholarship

This fund was established in April 1998 through contributions from the Community Scholarship Benefit, “An Evening of Music,” which honored Mr. Petrini, a local businessman and philanthropist. Income from the fund provides scholarships for Lawrence and/or Mercer County students selected on the basis of scholarship and financial need. The recipient is to be determined by the director of financial aid.

Dr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Phillips Scholarship

This fund was established in 1987 by a $50,000 grant from the Phillips Charitable Trust of Oil City, Pa., and a matching grant of $50,000 by Westminster College. The scholarship is awarded to students enrolled or planning to enroll at Westminster who reside in the following counties in Pennsylvania: Butler, Clarion, Forest, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer or Venango. Recipients must have strong academic records and be in need of financial assistance. Awards are for one year, but may be renewed for subsequent years if conditions of eligibility continue.

Pitcairn Crabbe Scholarship

This endowed scholarship provides assistance for promising students of need from Allegheny County.

Dorothy J. Pollock Endowed Scholarship

The income from this fund shall be used to assist academically capable students of Westminster College, with preference given to students indicating an interest in the field of chemistry. Academic achievement and financial need shall be considered for the awarding of this scholarship. Scholarships are renewable for four years provided recipients maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better. The recipient or recipients of such financial assistance hereunder shall be determined by the director of financial aid of Westminster College.

Robert P. Pomeroy Bible Awards

These awards, established in 1936, consist of Bibles and are awarded to two members of the first-year class doing outstanding work in Bible-content courses.

Mildred Henderson Prather Poetry Series and Awards Fund

This fund, established in 1987 in memory of Mildred Henderson of New Castle, Pa., a charter member of the New Castle Poetry Club, supports an annual poetry reading given by a nationally recognized poet. The visiting poet also will judge two poetry contests—one open to Westminster students, and the other to area high school students. The visiting poet will honor contest winners with the Mildred Prather Henderson Poetry Award at the annual reading.

Raymond G. Preston Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established on June 7, 1995, through gifts from the family and friends of Raymond G. Preston. Income from the fund is awarded annually (for a maximum period of two years) to a junior or senior majoring or minoring in business or education. First preference will be given to applicants in Lawrence County, Pa., with a GPA of 2.00 or higher.

Mark Prosinski Scholarship

The income from this fund, established in 1998 by the Class of 1988 in memory of their classmate, Mark "Pro" Prosinski, is to be awarded at the end of the junior year to the junior with the highest academic standing, based on GPA, for use in the senior academic year. The student should be full-time and should attend Westminster College for all undergraduate years. In the event of a tie, the scholarship will be awarded to the student on the basis of financial need. The student is to be determined by the director of financial aid.

Timothy E. Prosser Memorial Grant

This fund was established in 1976 by the Rev. and Mrs. Thomas E. Prosser of Emlenton, Pa., as a memorial to their son. Income from the fund is awarded annually to a third-year student who plans to enter the ministry or the Christian education field. Neither financial need nor scholarship is a consideration.

Bill Rankin Scholarship

This fund was established in 2008 by Bill Rankin '60 as part of the Golden Anniversary gift of the 1960 class. It is in honor of his wife, Carla, and his sons, Mark and Matt. Mr. Rankin was president of his freshman and sophomore classes, president of his fraternity, and vice president of both the student government association and the inter-fraternity council at Westminster. He was also a three-year varsity tennis letterman, team co-captain, inducted into the Titan Sports Hall of Fame, and graduated with magna cum laude honors. Prior to retiring, he was a senior executive in human resources with a Fortune Top 50 corporation and served with distinction as a member of Westminster's Board of Trustees for three terms beginning in 2002 and was named a Trustee Emeritus in 2017. He was a recipient of an Alumni Citation Award in 2016 and was the lead donor for the Bill Rankin Golf Center on Campus." In 2022, Westminster awarded Mr. Rankin with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. This scholarship was established to recognize a deserving, rising senior student who aspires to a career in human resources and has demonstrated those qualities as exemplified by Mr. Rankin. Factors for consideration include: character, scholarship, all-around student activities, and expressed interest in human resources. The recipient is to be determined jointly by the Department of Economics and Business chair and the vice president for enrollment.

William W. Rankin Scholarship

This fund was established in 2002 by William W. Rankin '60 in memory of his parents, Wesley O. and Mary B. Rankin, and in appreciation for what Westminster College has meant to him. Income from the fund is awarded annually to students at the discretion of the Financial Aid Office. First preference is given to students who hold membership in the Valencia Presbyterian Church, Valencia, Pa. Second preference is given to students who hold membership in any other church in the Beaver-Butler (Pa.) Presbytery.

Diana M. Reed Early Education Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2022 by Family and friends in honor of Diana's 31 years of service to the Education Department at Westminster College. Mrs. Reed served as a lecturer in the education department, the Head Teacher of the Psychology Department's Preschool Lab for 22 years and was also a classroom teacher prior to her tenure at Westminster. She has committed her professional life to investing in the education of young children and sharing that passion with future educators. This scholarship supports the mission of Westminster College and the opportunities that education and a strong work ethic can provide. This scholarship will be awarded to a Junior or Senior who is enrolled in the School of Education at Westminster College.

Glenn B. Reed Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1975 by Harry E. Reed in memory of his son, Glenn B. Reed, a summa cum laude graduate of the Class of 1950. The fund also includes contributions from classmates and friends. Glenn B. Reed, a Pittsburgh attorney, was president of the Westminster College Alumni Association in 1964-66 and a trustee of the College from 1967-75, during which time he served as secretary of the Board for five years. The income from the fund annually provides assistance for one or more outstanding outstanding juniors or seniors preparing to attend law school.

Thomas Clifford and Isabel Hunter Reed Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1983 by Mary I. Reed ’28 in memory of her parents. Income from the fund provides scholarships for students selected on the basis of character, scholarship and need with preference to children of ministers or missionaries.

W. Rick Reiber ’74 and Diane J. Reiber Endowed Scholarship

The primary objective of this endowment is to support Westminster student(s), with financial need, who are residents of Lawrence or Mercer counties and have demonstrated involvement in extracurricular activities. This Fund was formalized in 2022 by Rick and Diane Reiber in support of Westminster students and in recognition of the ongoing need to minimize student's college debt upon graduation. This scholarship is in support of the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best. The Reiber family are life-long residents of New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, and have demonstrated these characteristics through Rick's involvement as an active member of the TTO Executive Committee and as strong supporters of Titan Athletics as well as building a successful group of restaurants within the community. Oscar E. Remick Scholarship

This fund was established in March 1997 through gifts from the Community Benefit Program, "An Evening of Music," which honored Oscar E. Remick, Westminster’s 12th president. Income from the fund provides scholarships for area students selected on the basis of character, scholarship and financial need. The recipient is to be determined by the director of financial aid.

Rentz Family Endowed Scholarship

Created in 1988, by J. Fred and Richard Rentz Sr., of New Castle, Pa., the income generated from the $100,000 principal will be divided equally among four scholarships. One scholarship is named the Suzanne Shannon Rentz Scholarship, and the other three are named Rentz Family Scholarships. All four scholarships are restricted first to first-year students from Lawrence County; if none are eligible, the awards may be offered to first-year students from other counties. The preference is that qualifying first-year students would receive the scholarships for four years. The decision shall be made by the director of financial aid.

Robert C. & JoAnn Richardson Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this Scholarship was established in 2021, by Dr. Robert R. Richardson and Dr. Kathy B. Richardson in honor of Robert & JoAnn Richardson, to provide financial assistance for a promising student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources to attend college. In an effort to expand the geographical diversity of the student body, income from the Fund shall be used to provide scholarship(s) for non-Pennsylvania students with high financial need. First preference will be given to students who actively participated in communication-related activities in high school or who held significant leadership positions in high school organizations.

Charles G. and Elizabeth R. Ridl Scholarship

This endowed scholarship was established in 2007 by family members to honor Charles G. "Buzz" Ridl, longtime Westminster basketball coach and athletic director, and his wife, Elizabeth R. "Betty" Ridl, a steadfast supporter of students, their extracurricular lives, and of Westminster College in all its work. The scholarship will benefit a student with financial need who has demonstrated recognized achievement in both academic work and extracurricular activities. Prospective recipients must have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.00, and the award is renewable for four years provided recipients remain in good academic standing and are responsible members of the campus and larger communities. When applicable, first-generation students will be given special preference. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Ronda Vogan Riffle Scholarship

This fund was established in 2008 by Raymond T. Riffle as a tribute to his wife, Ronda Vogan Riffle, an alumna from the Class of 1956. Mrs. Riffle received a bachelor of science degree with a major in elementary education. Income from the fund is awarded annually to a rising senior female education major with financial need whose hometown is in western Pennsylvania and who is committed to the elementary school teaching profession. As a second preference, income from this fund shall be given to a rising senior female biology or chemistry major with financial need whose hometown is in western Pennsylvania and who is pursuing a career in healthcare. This preference honors Mrs. Riffle's father, Dr. Roland C. Vogan, an alumnus from the Class of 1929.

Jeffrey R. Roberts Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established by the family, classmates and friends of Jeffrey R. Roberts ’78, whose love and admiration for his fellow students and College played such an important part in his life. The income from this fund is to be given each year to a music major with ability, character and a financial need.

Louise Barr Robertson Scholarship

Mrs. James M. Ferguson, Bellevue, Pa., granted this fund in 1963 as a memorial to her mother. The income is used to provide aid for women students with scholastic ability and financial need.

Dorothy Mitchell Robins Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2008 through a bequest from the estate of Dorothy Mitchell Robins of Greenville, S.C. Miss Robins received her bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1939, and following her graduation from Westminster, enjoyed a distinguished, successful career as an industrial chemist for major corporations throughout the country. Income from the fund will be used annually to provide a scholarship to an entering student majoring in chemistry who presents with a minimum GPA of 3.50 in college preparatory subjects. The award is renewable for three years provided recipient remains enrolled as a chemistry major and in good academic standing. The award will be made at the discretion of the director of financial aid working in cooperation with the chair of the Department of Chemistry.

Catherine H. Rodgers Academic Assistant Grant

Established in 1992, the income will be awarded each year to a senior student with financial need who is enrolled in the field of reading; or if there be none, in the general field of elementary education. The recipient is to be determined by the director of financial aid.

Rohrbaugh/Mark Scholarship

This fund was established in 1983 by gifts from Catherine (Elder) Rohrbaugh Mark ’30 of Massillon, Ohio, in memory of her late husband, Dr. John R. Rohrbaugh ’29. Income from the fund is awarded annually to deserving students with need.

Irene Warkentin Sample Scholarship

This fund was established in 2010 through a bequest from the estate of Irene Warkentin Sample of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Dr. Sample received her B.A. from Tabor College, M.R.E. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, M.S.M. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Ed.D. from Columbia University. She joined the faculty in the music department of Westminster College in 1971 and served as a beloved professor until her retirement in 1990. Income from the fund will be awarded annually to provide scholarship assistance for a student(s) majoring in music education. The award will be made on the basis of merit and academic achievement as determined by the chair of the Department of Music and the director of financial aid.

Andrew L. Sands '54 & Eileen J. (Drugmand) Sands '54 and Lori

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this Fund was established in 2022 by Andrew L. Sands '54 in support of the mission of Westminster College and the opportunities that education and a strong work ethic can provide. The purpose of this endowment shall be to provide financial assistance for a promising student seeking higher education who has the ability, but not the financial resources to attend college. Income from the Fund shall be used to provide scholarship(s) for formally declared math, computer science, biology, chemistry or physics major(s) with financial need at Westminster College.

Dave and Kappy Sarver Scholarship

This fund was established in 2013 by David A. Sarver ’73 and Kathleen D. Jackson Sarver ’73. Income from the fund will be awarded as scholarship assistance to a qualified first-year student(s). This award may be used for tuition and fees. It is the intention of the donors that the recipient may also use the award to offset tuition-only expenses for one term of study abroad in a program acceptable to Westminster College. This award is given to a student who expands the diversity (ethnic, geographic or sexual orientation) of the student body and may be renewable for up to an additional three years, provided the student maintains good academic standing. Preference will be given to a student who has chosen history, mathematics, or education as their major. The award is made at the the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Harriet Jackson Sarver Scholarship

Income from this fund, established in 1986, is awarded annually to a senior majoring in mathematics.

Charles F. and Lillian C. Saylor Scholarship

The income from this fund, established in 1973 by gifts from Dr. Saylor and friends, is used to provide financial assistance for education students at Westminster College. Dr. Saylor was dean of the College emeritus.

Timothy and Anne Filer Schenz Endowed Scholarship

The primary objective of this endowment is to support Westminster student(s) who are interested in the fields of chemistry or nursing. This Fund was formalized in 2022 by Timothy and Anne Filer Schenz in support of Westminster students and in recognition of the ongoing need to minimize students' college debt upon graduation. This scholarship is in support of the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics that have distinguished human beings at their best.

Harrie Elizabeth Parker Schmid Scholarship

This fund was established in 1980 by a bequest from Mrs. Schmid of New Castle, Pa., a 1924 graduate. The income is used to further the education of deserving students attending Westminster College.

Alice W. Schmidt '56 Memorial Scholarship

This award is given to an elementary education student with financial need, and may be renewable for up to an additional three years, provided the student remains an elementary education major and maintains a 3.0 GPA at Westminster College. This scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the Director of Financial Aid. This scholarship was established in memory of Alice W. Schmidt in 2021 by her family, in support of the mission of Westminster College and to help other students become educators. Alice Wagner Schmidt graduated from Westminster in 1956 and married John L. Schmidt '55 whom she met in The Tub on campus. Mrs. Schmidt was an Alpha Gam and Dr. Schmidt was a founding member of Phi Tau. All three of Alice and John's children also graduated from Westminster College. Mrs. Schmidt's career included teaching first grade while her husband attended seminary, and after her three children were grown, she returned to helping others by working in nursing homes. It was the wish of Mrs. Schmidt that others would enjoy teaching as much as she did.

Dennis J. Schotsch '75 Scholarship Fund

This fund was established in 2017 by Dennis J. Schotsch '75 a cum laude graduate with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Schotsch was a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon and upon graduation began a 40-year career with FirstEnergy Corporation. Income from the fund shall be used to provide a renewable, need-based scholarship to students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher provided the recipient remains in good academic standing.

Richard "Rich" Sentner '91 Memorial Fund

This scholarship is designed to celebrate the life of Richard J. Sentner '91 and to memorialize his legacy, not just as a graduate of Westminster, but also as a former member of the swimming and diving team, where he was an All-American and varsity record-setting diver.

Eugene G. Sharkey Memorial Award

The fund was established in 2005 by family and friends as a memorial to the life of beloved Westminster College professor, Dr. Eugene G. Sharkey. The award is granted to a second-semester junior history major engaged in a research project that will carry into the senior year. Candidates for the award will submit a research proposal (guidelines for the proposal will be made available to candidates) to be evaluated by a selection committee composed of the faculty of the history division of the Department of Religion, History, Philosophy and Classics. One award will be granted each year. Proposals will normally be due to the coordinator of the history division by no later than March 31. The award will be announced at the Spring Honors Convocation. History students writing Honors theses or who are engaged in especially ambitious capstone projects are considered ideal candidates for this scholarship. Half the award amount will be made available to the awardee at the time of the appointment to be used to fund research, travel and supplies, and the balance of the award amount will be granted as a scholarship against tuition and fees for the senior year.

Shear Family Memorial Scholarship

It was established in 1983 by the family in memory of Dr. James A. Shear ’39 and his father, Dr. Ray H. Shear ’11.

John Shilling Scholarship

This fund was established in 1995 by the estate of Margaret Shilling Lieb ’32 in honor and memory of her brother, John Shilling ’36. The income is to be applied toward scholarships for students with financial need who receive average grades.

Sigma Nu Legacy Scholarship

This fund was established in 2014 by the Kappa Phi Lambda Board to recognize the long-standing association between the Epsilon Psi chapter of Sigma Nu and Westminster College. Income from the fund will be used to provide funds to students who are the child or grandchild of a Westminster Sigma Nu alumnus. Legacy students must notify the director of financial aid of their Sigma Nu connection, in order to be considered for this award.

Mina Grundish Simpson Scholarship

This fund was established in 1977 from the estate of Howard C. Simpson of Lancaster, Pa., a member of the Class of 1918, in memory of his wife, a 1917 graduate. The income, or the principal, if required, from the fund provides annual scholarship aid for deserving music students with talent and need.

Louis Skurcenski '64 Scholarship

This scholarship, established in 1999, is in loving memory of Louis Skurcenski Jr., Class of 1964, with contributions from his family and friends. The fund will benefit a deserving chemistry major of junior or senior status. Second preference may be given to a biology, physics, or computer science major. The student(s) must show in writing their future goals and list extracurricular activities from high school to the present day. The student should exemplify the qualities of honesty and integrity and must also be dedicated to personal relationships and community service. The student is to be selected by the director of financial aid, in conjunction with the chair of the Chemistry Department, or selected department by the student's major, after review with family members.

Samuel H. Sloan Memorial Scholarship

Established in 1973 in memory of Associate Professor Sloan of the Department of Economics and Business, it is presented annually to one of the top five senior students in the Economics and Business Department based on their all-college average at the end of their junior year. In addition to academic achievement, the student’s record of campus citizenship and involvement in campus activities is considered.

Jane Smiley Scholarship

The income from this fund, established in 1988 by the Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Brownlee, is to be used to provide financial assistance to Westminster College students who have graduated from Union High School, Burgettstown, Pa., or to qualified Westminster students from the Washington County area.

Betty L. Smith Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1988 by family members and friends as a memorial to Betty L. Smith. The recipient must have financial need with priority given to a Westminster student who is a member of the Second United Presbyterian Church of New Castle, or who is a member of the Rev. Charles Van Gorder’s church, or a worthwhile Westminster student. The decision shall be made by the director of financial aid.

Dorothy Kendall Smith Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established in honor of Mrs. Dorothy Kendall Smith, a lifetime Lawrence County resident, by her son Dr. Donald L. Smith '54, and his wife, Rae Marie Smith. The student recipient(s) should be a sophomore, junior or senior education or pre-med major and a resident of Lawrence County with first preference from Neshannock Township. The scholarship should be awarded on the basis of financial need by the director of financial aid.

Elizabeth A. Smith '81 Scholarship

This fund was established in 2021 by Elizabeth A. Smith '81. Betsy was a History and Sociology major and member of the Kappa Delta sorority while attending Westminster. She was also a three-sport athlete, participating on the women's volleyball team, basketball team and softball team in addition to serving as the manager of the baseball team, prior to the softball team being initiated on campus. Betsy was instrumental in getting the softball program started at Westminster. Upon graduation, she began a 40-year career in the insurance industry.

Mrs. William L. Smith Scholarship

The income from a fund established in 1957 by Mrs. Mary Smith Crawford of Sewickley, Pa., in memory of her mother, Mrs. William L. Smith, is given to a man or a woman in the senior class who is preparing for a church-related occupation and who needs assistance.

James D. South Memorial Scholarship

Established in 2001 by a bequest from James D. South ’35, this fund is to be invested and the income used to provide annual awards to students on the basis of scholastic achievement in the fields of history and/or political science as judged by the faculty in these departments and the director of financial aid.

Allen P. Splete Scholarship

The Allen P. Splete Leadership and Service Award is awarded annually to a student who has provided sound leadership and selfless volunteerism to the curricular and co-curricular life on the Westminster campus. The award is named in honor of Dr. Allen P. Splete, president of Westminster College from 1982-1985.

Josiah Stephenson Scholarship

This scholarship was created by a bequest in 1963 from the estate of Josiah Stephenson, New Castle, Pa. The income is used to assist young men preparing for the ministry.

G. Alan and Margaret E. Sternbergh Scholarship

Income from the fund, established in 1991 by G. Alan Sternbergh ’51 and his wife, Margaret Elliott Sternbergh ’54, is awarded annually to first-year students at the discretion of the Financial Aid Office. First preference is given to students whose families hold membership in the Neshannock Presbyterian Church, New Wilmington, Pa. Second preference is for graduates of Wilmington Area School District, and third preference is for graduates from other Lawrence County school districts. Mr. Sternbergh served as director of career planning and placement at Westminster for 22 years.

Donald Calvert Stewart Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1987 by a bequest from Dorothy S. Kenney, St. Petersburg, Fla., in memory of her brother, a lifelong resident of Butler, Pa. Income from the fund is awarded annually, preferably to men from the Butler area who have financial need and who have demonstrated character, self-reliance and a sense of family responsibility.

Gladys Blaine Strawn Science Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established in February 2000 in honor of female students of science by Ms. Gladys Blaine Strawn, Class of 1935. Ms. Strawn was a chemistry major while at Westminster College and taught in public education for 50 years. The scholarship(s) should be awarded to a sophomore, junior or senior female science major(s). The student(s), selected by the director of financial aid, should have a 3.00 GPA and demonstrate financial need.

William H. Struthers Foundation Scholarship

Income from a fund, established in 1959, is to provide scholarships for young men and women who do not have the means for a college education. Preference is shown to children and cousins of the late William H. Struthers of Bellevue, Pa., and their descendants, then to graduates of either Bellevue High School or Canonsburg High School. If none of these apply, the funds may be used for other students.

Tracy L. Stuck ’88 Endowed Scholarship for Student Activities

This scholarship was established by Richard and Ellen Stuck, parents of Steven Stuck ’90 and Tracy Stuck ’88. This scholarship aims to honor Tracy L. Stuck’s service to the Westminster College Board of Trustees and provide financial assistance to students engaged in out-of-classroom experiences that Tracy participated in, ultimately contributing to her career. Preference will be given to a Westminster College cheerleader or the Titan mascot, a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority or a Westminster College student leader recommended by the Vice President of Student Life.

Lance C. Sturni '68 Scholarship Fund

This need-based scholarship was established in 2016 as a planned gift in memory of 1968 alumnus, Lance C. Sturni. Lance received his degree in chemistry and enjoyed 33 years of service with PPG Industries. He spent the last 15 years of retirement in Somerset, Pa., where he served as past president of the Somerset Rotary Club and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Somerset Planning Commission, served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Flight 93 and served on the Board of Directors of the Somerset Country Club. He credited much of lifetime success to his Westminster education and his lifelong friendships formed with the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Dr. James A. Swindler and Jean (Swindler) Hosie '50 Scholarship

This fund was established in 2016 by Matthew P. Hosie ‘49. In 1978, the award began as the James A. Swindler Scholar Award by Matthew and Jean Hosie and in memory of Jean’s father, Dr. Swindler, who taught physics at Westminster College from 1919 to 1955. This fund will provide a need-based scholarship to a physics major who displays academic excellence, character and service to Westminster.

Gilbert H. Taylor Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1987 by a friend of the classics as a memorial to Professor Gilbert H. Taylor, who taught Latin and Greek at Westminster from 1925-53. Income is awarded annually to a new or continuing student of Latin or Greek on the basis of merit. Preference is given to a student majoring in Latin, but if there is no deserving Latin major, the scholarship is awarded to a deserving student minoring in Latin or Greek.

Glenn H. Thompson '68 and Linda (Stephenson) Thompson '70 Scholarship

Income from the fund shall be used to provide a scholarship to a rising junior student who is majoring in environmental science or a new, related discipline that is under the direction of the Environmental Science Committee with a minimum all-College GPA of 3.50. The scholarship is renewable for one year provided that the minimum GPA is maintained. Selection is made by the Environmental Science Committee in consultation with the director of financial aid. Financial need is not necessarily a consideration.

Linda S. '70 and Glenn H. Thompson '68 Nursing Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this Fund was established in 2021 by Linda and Glenn Thompson in support of the mission of Westminster College and the opportunities that education and a strong work ethic can provide. In an effort to broaden traditionally underrepresented populations in the nursing program at Westminster College, this scholarship will be awarded to students with strong academic achievement and who are planning for a career in the field of nursing.

Louise T. Thompson and Brose E. Thompson Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established by the generosity of the Thompson family to pay tribute to several family members, including of utmost importance, Louise Throop Thompson and Brose E. Thompson. Louise graduated from Slippery Rock University in 1945 and dedicated 35 years of her life to teaching in Evans City and Connoquenessing elementary schools. Brose, a 1932 Grove City College graduate, received his M.S.Ed. in 1962 from Westminster College and retired as principal of the former Victory School in Venango County after 30 years of public education service. This fund also pays tribute to the parents of Louise Throop Thompson, (John B. and Jessie Jenkins Throop), and Louise's aunt, Mande Throop, who raised Louise from age 2 upon Jessie's death. The parents of Brose Thompson, Josephine Armstrong Thompson Hazlett, John Thompson and Howard Hazlett (Howard married Josephine after John's death) are also being honored through this scholarship. Income from the fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to students with demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. First preference will be given to a student enrolled in the Graduate Program at Westminster pursuing a master of education degree. Second preference will be given to an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in the Department of Education. The award is renewable provided the recipient remains in good academic standing. The recipient is selected by the director of financial aid in accordance with scholarship policies of the College.

Edwin and Joy Tobin Scholarship

This fund provides an unrestricted endowed scholarship which will be awarded at the discretion of the Financial Aid Office. Dr. Edwin G. and Dr. Joy D. Tobin both received their M.Ed. degrees from Westminster. Their three children graduated from the College as well. Dr. Edwin Tobin served as director of admissions at the College for 18 years.

Paul D. Trokhan ’68 & Marcia L. Trokhan Endowed Scholarship in Chemistry

Paul Trokhan graduated from Westminster College in 1968 with a degree in chemistry. After serving in the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam, he returned to graduate studies in chemical engineering at Lehigh University. Afterward, he was employed by Procter & Gamble in their research and development organization for 51 years, retiring in 2022. He was ultimately named to the position of senior vice president-senior innovator, the top position in Procter & Gamble’s technical career system. At the time of his retirement, he was a named inventor on more than 450 U.S. patents. The primary objective of this scholarship is to address the underrepresentation of females in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry and to provide financial aid to Westminster students, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable educational and professional environment.

Thomas A. Tupitza '79 and Carol J. Tupitza Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund, formalized in 2016, is in support of the mission of Westminster College. As a first preference, scholarships will be awarded to students in good academic standing whose hometown is in Erie County, Pa. As a second preference, this scholarship is awarded to students in good academic standing whose hometown is in one of the following counties: Crawford County, Pa., Warren County, Pa., or Chautauqua County, N.Y.

J. Hilton Turner Classics Scholarship

This fund is the successor of the J. Hilton Turner Classics Prize which was established in 1987 to honor Dr. Turner, professor of Greek and Latin from 1952-1984, and maintained by gifts from Maggie Magee, Class of 1961, a student of his in the classics. It was made a permanent fund in 1997 and has been supplemented by funds given by Professor Turner during his life and from his estate, as well as funds given in honor of Professor Turner and in his memory. Income from the fund may be used to support the participation of students in the honors program activity dealing with classical culture taught in Athens or in other honors program activities focused on ancient Greece or Rome. It may also be used to support students who display superior performance in Classical or Koine Greek or Latin. Awards may be offered to prospective students if conditioned on matriculation and participation in the above activities. Students may receive more than one award from this fund.

Vance Distinguished Scholar Program

The Vance Distinguished Scholarship Program was established in 1998 by Raymond G. and Martha Vance Wile ’57 to honor the Vance family of New Wilmington. Scholarships are awarded to entering students who present a minimum SAT score of 1300 or better, or an ACT composite of 29 or better, and a minimum GPA of 3.75 in college preparatory subjects. Scholarships are renewable for three years provided recipients maintain an overall GPA of 3.00 or better. Awards will be determined by the director of financial aid.

Van Gorder/Smith Scholarship

This fund was established in 1976 by gifts from Maurine Smith Van Gorder '40 and Betty L. Smith '46 in memory of their uncle, Dr. Charles R. Frischkorn. The income provides substantial annual grants to pre-medical or other pre-professional students in any class. Recipients must have outstanding academic credentials and be highly recommended by their clergyman. Preference is given to students from Lawrence County, Pa. The award may be continued, provided a 3.30 GPA is maintained.

George Carothers Vincent Memorial Fund

This fund, established in 1965, is a memorial to George Carothers Vincent, one of the leaders in the founding of Westminster.

Douglas A. '65 and Lindy L. (Colvin) '67 Webb Scholarship

With a strong belief in the value of education in equipping future generations, this Fund was established in 2018 by Douglas A. and Lindy L. Webb in support of the mission of Westminster College and the opportunities that education can provide. Income from the Fund shall be used to provide scholarship for a Westminster student majoring in mathematics, computer science or another applied science.

Donald R. and Gladyne C. Weisenstein Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 by Donald R. and Gladyne C. Weisenstein. Mr. Weisenstein was a 1947 alumnus who came to Westminster from Butler, Pa., where his parents and forebears lived for many years. Awards from this fund are to be made annually to talented students with good academic records and financial need. First preference is given to students from Butler County, Pa. Second preference is given to students from counties surrounding Butler County. Recommendations from a Westminster department chair would be meaningful in the selection process. The student selected for an award is to be determined by the director of financial aid.

Robert Wells and Harriet McLaughry Veach Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 1982 by Dr. Elizabeth M. Veach ’23, New Wilmington, Pa., and members of the family, in memory of their parents, both graduates of Westminster in the 1890s.

Nell Glaser Whipkey and Kenneth L. Whipkey Scholarship

This fund was established in 2008 by Nell Glaser Whipkey and Dr. Kenneth L. Whipkey. Mrs. Whipkey is an alumna from the Class of 1959; Dr. Whipkey served Westminster College from 1968 to 1984 as a member of the faculty in the Department of Mathematics. Income from this fund will be awarded annually to provide scholarship assistance to a mathematics or computer science major with financial need. The award is made at the discretion of the chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science working in cooperation with the director of financial aid.

Drs. Richard L. and Joanne F. White Scholarship

This fund was established in 2011 by Drs. Richard L. and Joanne F. White in recognition of the Golden Anniversary Celebration for the Class of 1961. Dr. White received his bachelor of science in chemistry from Westminster in 1961 and holds a master’s degree in international affairs and a doctoral degree in international treaty law from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. White served as a research scientist for PPG before joining the Bayer Corporation. He retired in 1999 as executive vice president of North American Operations. Dr. White is a former member of Westminster’s Board of Trustees and served the College from 1996 through 2009. Dr. Joanne F. “Joni” White received her bachelor of science in nursing degree from Carlow College. She holds a master of science in nursing education and a doctoral degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. White was a professor at Duquesne University for 25 years, serving as assistant dean in the School of Nursing, then associate dean and later acting dean. She retired as associate dean of nursing and executive director of the Duquesne University Center for International Nursing. Income from the fund is awarded annually as scholarship assistance for an incoming student pursuing a chemistry or biology major. The recipient will be assured of assistance throughout his or her years at Westminster provided the student remains enrolled as a chemistry or biology major and maintains an overall GPA of 3.00. The award is made on the basis of academic achievement and financial need as determined by the director of financial aid.

Whitehall Presbyterian Church Scholarship

This Fund was formalized in 2022 by the Session of Whitehall Presbyterian Church and its members, in support of Westminster students and in support of academic achievement and the ongoing need to support spiritual growth. This scholarship is in support of the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best.

J. Wallace Wiggins Scholarship

This fund was established in 2013 through a gift received from the Estate of J. Wallace Wiggins, an alumnus from the Class of 1948. Mr. Wiggins received his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration- Management from Westminster College and his Masters in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Income from the fund will be used to provide scholarship assistance to deserving students with demonstrated financial need and academic merit. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Rev. James E. Wigley Jr. Scholarship

This fund was established in 2013 through a bequest received from the estate of the Rev. James E. Wigley Jr. of New Wilmington, Pa. The Rev. Wigley received a bachelor of arts degree in Christian education from Westminster College in 1953 and his master’s in theology from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He was ordained into the ministry on Dec. 11, 1956, and served various churches until his retirement in 1992. Income from this fund will be awarded annually as scholarship assistance for a student with demonstrated academic achievement and financial need. This award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Sam and Katherine Wiley Scholarship

This fund was established in 2001 by S. Donald and Josephine Hartman Wiley ’50 ’49 in memory of Mr. Wiley’s parents, Sam and Katherine Wiley. The income from the fund will be used to support students from Northern Ireland to study at Westminster College for a one-year period. Students will be selected by and the scholarship administered through the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities.

Marilyn Elkins Wilgocki Music Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Marilyn Elkins Wilgocki '57 and is designed to assist one deserving and talented junior or senior-level student on an annual basis who is pursuing a degree in sacred music. The student should be in preparation for employment in music ministry at the church level or for teaching sacred music at an institution of higher learning. If no student meets the first preference criteria, the award may be used to assist one deserving and talented junior or senior level student pursuing a bachelor of music degree in music education or performance. The scholarship shall be awarded at the discretion of the director of financial aid and the chair of the Music Department and may be used for tuition, food and housing, supplies, music lessons, or special studies.

D. Alan and Llwanda K. Williams Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 by gifts from D. Alan Williams ’52 and Llwanda Knepshield Williams ’52. Income from the fund is awarded annually as a merit scholarship to a second-year education major interested in pursuing a career as an elementary or secondary teacher. The award is renewable for the third and fourth years of study provided the recipient maintains an overall GPA of 3.00 or better. The recipient is selected by the chair of the Department of Education in consultation with the director of financial aid.

Williamson Family Scholarship

The Williamson Scholarship Fund was established in 2008 to honor R. Thomas Williamson, Westminster’s 13th President, and his wife, Jean Simmonds Williamson, for their outstanding leadership and service to the College from 1997 to 2008. Income from the fund will be used to provide annual scholarship assistance to a deserving student with significant financial need with a 3.00 GPA or better. The award is made at the discretion of the director of financial aid.

Donald M. and M. Elaine Willson Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established in 2004 by Ret. Col. Donald M. Willson, longtime resident of New Wilmington and friend of Westminster College, and his sons, Dr. Clinton Willson and Capt. Ross Willson. The scholarship is intended as a memorial to Ret. Col. Willson's late wife, Elaine, who earned her bachelor of science in nursing from Slippery Rock State College in 1978 and her master of education from Westminster College in 1983. Elaine taught pediatrics at the Saint Francis School of Nursing prior to her death in 1987. Income from this fund will support scholarships for graduate students enrolled in the Graduate Program who have earned at least 15 credits toward a graduate degree and maintained a GPA of 3.50 in graduate study. Preference will be given to graduate students with nursing backgrounds who have interest in teaching, counseling, or education-related fields and who have demonstrated financial need. Recipients will be selected by the director of the Graduate Program, a designee from the Graduate Program faculty, and the director of financial aid. With permission from his sons, this fund was renamed in 2009 following the death of Donald M. Willson. Willson earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a master's in business administration from Duquesne University. Willson served his country with distinction and ended a 35-year military career as the deputy commander of operations with the 171 Air Refueling Wing of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. In retirement, he remained committed to serving others through mission outreach work with both Habitat for Humanity and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance traveling to the Dominican Republic and making repeated trips to the Hurricane Katrina disaster area. Willson was a valued member of the Westminster College community. He supported the College as a member of the 1852 Society and The Legacy Society. But he is best known for his work at Memorial Field House from 1996-2007 as a building attendant where he interacted with students, parents and guests representing the College to various constituencies. Willson was an avid fan of all Titan sports.

Arthur “Skip” Winter ’73 & Judith “Judy” Engwer Winter ’73 Endowed Scholarship

In 2024, Skip and Judy Winter established this scholarship at Westminster College to demonstrate their support for the institution and their commitment to aiding individuals who possess the skills and ambition but lack the financial means to pursue their goals successfully. Skip, a 1973 graduate of Westminster College with a degree in history, utilized the education and leadership development he acquired at Westminster to excel in a successful career spanning over 40 years in management and procurement. Judy spent her 40-year career in the field of education and aims to inspire dedicated Westminster students to pursue their passion for educating young people. Through this endowed scholarship, the Winters aim to empower deserving individuals to overcome financial barriers and achieve their academic and professional aspirations at Westminster College. The scholarship will provide financial assistance to a rising sophomore who has declared elementary/special education as their major, achieved academically and has demonstrated a strong, active, participatory interest in community service in their high school years and during their time as a student at Westminster.

Robert P. Winters '56 and Jean (Aungst) Winters '57 Scholarship

This fund was established in 2016 by Robert and Jean Winters, alumni of Westminster College. This scholarship supports the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics that have distinguished human beings at their best. The liberal arts tradition is the foundation of the curriculum continually designed to service this mission in a rapidly changing world. The College sees the well-educated person as one whose skills are complemented by ever-developing values and ideals identified in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

Young Presbyterian Scholarship Program

The Young Presbyterian Scholarship Program was endowed in 2005 with a gift received from the estate of Miss Mary E. Reid ’38. Miss Reid enjoyed a distinguished career in education which included serving as dean of students at the Ellis School for Girls in Philadelphia and as a guidance counselor at Upper Darby High School. She returned to her hometown of New Wilmington in retirement, was a member and church elder at the New Wilmington Presbyterian Church, and remained active in community organizations. Income from this fund will be used to offset the College’s existing YPS program funding.

Joseph F. and Cecelia R. Zunic Scholarship

Income from the fund shall be used to provide scholarship assistance to a junior or senior student within the Economics and Business Department, preferably an accounting major, who has shown significant improvement in course work and has demonstrated involvement in on-campus extracurricular activities. A nomination by a current faculty member, via written correspondence to the Chair of the Economics & Business Department, is required for a student to be considered for the award. Selection is made by the chair of the Economics & Business Department in consultation with the director of financial aid.

The John D. ’74 and Deborah Hall Zupanovich ‘76 Scholarship

The primary objective of this endowment is to support Westminster student(s), with financial need, who are concentrating in the fields of chemistry or biology. This Fund was formalized in 2022 by John and Deborah Zupanovich in support of Westminster students and in recognition of the ongoing need to minimize students' college debt upon graduation. This scholarship is in support of the mission of Westminster College to help men and women develop competencies, commitments, and characteristics which have distinguished human beings at their best.

The Wayne H. Christy Lectureship was established to sponsor an annual lectureship in Christian ethics arranged by the Office of Faith & Spirituality.

George Bleasby Colloquium

This fund was established in memory of Dr. George A. Bleasby, Professor of English Emeritus of Westminster College. Dr. Bleasby was a true friend of the Westminster College Library; he played a key role in organizing and establishing our Friends of the Library chapter and the McGill Libary Special Collection. This fund will be used to acquire resources in the field of literature and may also be used to support access to literature resources.

Henderson Lecture

The Henderson Lecture was founded by the late Dr. Joseph R. Henderson and his wife, Elizabeth, to encourage and recognize original and continuing research and scholarship among Westminster College faculty, and to afford the opportunity for faculty to share their learning with the academic community. Dr. Henderson was a professor of education emeritus at Westminster, having served as chair of the Department of Education and as director of the Graduate Program.

Ken and Nancy Long Chemistry Lectureship

This fund was established by Dr. Ken and Nancy Long in 2006 to fund an annual lecture in the broad field of chemistry. Dr. Long taught in the Department of Chemistry at Westminster from 1962-2002. The faculty of the Department of Chemistry has the responsibility for deciding who to invite, the topic, scheduling and other logistical concerns each year.

Psychology and Neuroscience Colloquium

This fund was established in 2016 by Dr. David B. Gray ’56, Dr. Gwendolyn Gray Schwartz, Dr. Alan G. Gittis, and Dr. Aryn Hilary Gittis. The purpose of this fund is further immerse undergraduates in the rigorous sciences of psychology and neuroscience, and thus be an inspiration to our students. The speakers would model samples of the best research being done at a national level. The presentations would raise the aspirations of our students, and stimulate the students and faculty. The research effort of our students would be recognized and rewarded by having meaningful interaction with national scholars.

Robert M. Woods Memorial Lecture

The Woods Memorial Lecture honors Dr. Robert M. Woods, professor of physics at Westminster College from 1947-1972. It is made possible by a gift from the Woods family that has been supplemented over the years by gifts from friends and alumni.
