The artwork of Westminster College senior Josh Glaser is currently being showcased in the senior capstone exhibition running Monday, Nov. 11 through Friday, Dec. 6 in the Foster Art Gallery in Patterson Hall. A gallery reception will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12.
Glaser’s exhibition will feature a series of his sculptures using glass, epoxy and wood.
“My work attempts to push the boundaries of the materials. By using elements and principles of design, such as form, line and color, I can focus on process and craftsmanship while also engaging the viewer in my workm” said Glaser, a senior sports management and fine art double major from Indiana, Pa. “The goal of my work is not to represent reality but rather to explore the creative process by using materials or innovative processes.”
Working with materials like glass, wood, epoxy, Glaser said he can express ideas and concepts using processes that draw viewers in.
“I would like to ignite a sense of curiosity when viewing, by putting questions of how the sculpture was made in the viewer’s mind. I work with subject matters that can range from recognizable objects to abstraction,” he said.
Glaser said he is currently exploring the use of materials like glass and epoxy to create sculptural paintings. “I’m creating layered paintings encased within the confines of the glass, fused together with epoxy. It is an updated take on cubism and minimalism that uses the materials to push expressionism through the paintings,” he added.
The capstone is a senior-level course within the major designed to provide an opportunity for students to work independently with Westminster art faculty to assess their cumulative body of work.
The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
