Dr. Deanne Buffalari, associate professor of neuroscience and psychology at Westminster College, recently gave a presentation and served as a workshop leader at the Annual Conference on Teaching for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP) in Louisville, Ky., in October.
Buffalari is currently a member of the STP Mid-career Committee, and she and other committee members presented results from a national survey of faculty who are in the mid-career stage.
"Professionally, there is a lot of support and community for individuals during the early stages of their career, which is wonderful and really important,” said Buffalari. “But once you hit mid-career, that can disappear a bit. We’re working to better understand how that can impact career progress and satisfaction, and to eventually craft suggestions and ideas for how to make the mid-career a more positive stage for faculty.”
Buffalari also joined colleagues to lead a workshop on integrating alternative grading practices in the classroom. She is co-editor of an edited volume currently in final stages of the publication process with Dr. KatieAnn Skogsberg of Centre College and Dr. Ellen Carpenter of Virginia Commonwealth University on that same topic. After that publication has been released, she will begin editing a book on the mid-career stage.
In addition to her committee responsibilities, Buffalari also serves as an associate editor for the e-book group where she reviews scholarship of teaching and learning grants.
Buffalari is currently serving as the Faculty Development Officer at Westminster College. She joined the Westminster faculty in 2014 after earning her undergraduate degree from Allegheny College and her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.
