For Westminster and local community members looking for ways to help those impacted by the Southern California wildfires, Westminster College will host a Shoot for a Cause fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 15, during the men’s and women’s basketball games on the Ron Galbreath Court in  the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in Westminster’s Memorial Field House.

Members of the public and campus community are invited to show off their basketball skills during quarter breaks and halftime of the women’s game that begins at 1 p.m., and during halftime of the men’s game that begins at 3 p.m. Both Titan games are against Franciscan University.

Shots will be $1 for kids ages 10 and under, $2 for high school and college students and $5 for adults. Participants will receive a T-shirt while supplies last. Face painting and candy grams will also be available for a donation during the games. All proceeds will be sent to the American Red Cross to assist with wildfire relief efforts.

Sponsored by Westminster’s Office of Faith and Spirituality, the Department of Athletics and the men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball and men’s lacrosse teams, the creation of the fundraiser grew from a discussion among Westminster student leaders. Westminster currently has 12 students from California.

Current Westminster College graduate student and California native Emma Rudolph—who earned her bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Westminster in 2024—said she is appreciative of the interest in supporting the wildfire relief efforts.

“I—along with the 12 other students from California—am incredibly grateful that the College and the local community are coming together to support our home state. It’s hard to be across the country while our home communities experience this tragedy, and the support we’ve received has meant a lot,” said Rudolph, who hails from Santa Clarita, Calif.

“This is another example of how Westminster and the local community step up in service to the world around us,” said the Rev. James Mohr II, College chaplain and director of church relations. In addition to supporting wildfire relief efforts, the Westminster community also participated in the Christmas Angel Giving Tree fundraiser to support local children and will provide Hurricane Helene relief this spring during the Spring Break with a Purpose trip to North Carolina. “Together we strive to do our part.”
