The curriculum research of several Westminster College psychology professors has been published in the March issue of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) quarterly magazine and featured on the cover.
"Multi-level Integration of Student Research in a Psychology/Neuroscience Curriculum" was written by Drs. Sandra K. Webster, Mandy Medvin, Jamie McMinn, Kirk Lunnen, Sherri Pataki, and Alan Gittis.
"Westminster has had a senior research requirement for over 30 years for psychology and related interdisciplinary majors," Webster said. "During the past decade we did significant restructuring of the curricula to allow for earlier, more student-led and student interactive research involvement. We also restructured the senior research requirement to provide more faculty involvement. Our new structure has produced research teams, with each member having his or her own project, but the projects related through methods and/or topics.
"Having completed eight years of the revised curriculum, we are in a position to describe its outcomes in terms of student/faculty collaborative research and student outcomes. We have national comparative data for our students that supports our claims that the research rich undergraduate curriculum benefits our student learning."
Webster, who has been with Westminster College since 1983, is also the Faculty Development Officer. She earned her undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Westminster College announces several personal enrichment and leisure courses for community residents. Continuing Education classes and seminars are non-credit and are open to all interested individuals. Formal admission to Westminster College is not required.
Dr. Linda P. Domanski, assistant professor of education at Westminster College, was included in the sixth edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2000.
Westminster College President Emeritus Dr. Oscar E. Remick, will be honored posthumously with the Distinguished Public Service Award by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) in October.
Westminster College will award Alumni Citations to Judge George "Tookie" James, Dr. Paul Musser and Mrs. Margaret Newcomb Musser, and Dr. Timothy W. Schenz. Robert C. Jackson will receive the Outstanding Young Alumni Award at the annual Citation Celebration Reception and Dinner Friday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the Witherspoon Rooms of the McKelvey Campus Center.
Huang Xiang, contemporary Chinese poet, will read his poetry at Westminster College as part of the Heinz Lecture Series Monday, May 7, at 7 p.m. in Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.
The Westminster College Drinko Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning has awarded grants to eight students to continue their undergraduate research and to present their work at the Midwest Model UN Conference to be held Feb. 13-16 in St. Louis.
U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire of the 4th District of Pennsylvania will speak and answer questions at Westminster College Monday, Oct. 6, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., in the Berlin Lounge of the McKelvey Campus Center. The visit , originally scheduled for Oct. 3, was rescheduled due to the House vote on the financial bailout.
Eleven Westminster College French and Spanish majors will give their capstone presentations in the Witherspoon Maple Room of the McKelvey Campus Center. The presentations are free and open to the public.
The Corporation for National and Community Service honored Westminster College with a place on the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to America's communities.
